Job Description



This position will facilitate the use of student and campus data within the campus community to promote student success. Through an in-depth understanding of higher education business processes, data visualization skills, data query tools, and user experience design, this position will collaborate with a wide variety of data consumers, providing them with the data and reports they need in the format best suited to their use. This position will focus on data dissemination and collaboration with college and department leadership, the advisement community, Continuing Education, Salt Lake Center, and other campus entities. Essential Functions

  • Design, Creation, and Maintenance of Requested Reports and Visualizations
  • Design and develop critical on-going and student success focused data reports for college and department leadership, Salt Lake Center, Continuing Education, and other campus entities. These reports will include spreadsheets and data visualizations.
  • Analyze, design, and validate data architecture within the Enrollment Services internal data warehouse to optimize effective data use.
  • Deploy user design methodology to provide data to campus entities in a way that best aligns with their needs and office workflow and provides insights into student success.
  • Develop strategies for increased efficiency in reporting data to campus users.
  • Monitor all incoming data requests to understand data needs and level of complexity.
  • Review SQL code issues and completed SQL codes for data accuracy.

  • Design, Creation, and Maintenance of Reporting Portal Infrastructure
  • Identify key data needs from across campus including college and department leadership, and other campus entities.
  • Design a reporting request and dissemination process, platform and website that facilitates the efficient creation and dissemination of data regardless of report type (pdf, spreadsheet, data visualization) and data purpose (on-going business need, external survey or accreditation fulfillment, exploratory research).
  • Train users across campus on reporting process, platform, and website. Design a training process that considers employee turn-over.

  • Campus Collaboration and Support
  • Participate as a data expert in major technology projects that often require inter-office participation (OIT, Colleges, Departments, etc.)
  • Participate in constant and continued collaboration with other Research & Reporting Data Analysts.
  • Understand and work in alignment with FERPA policies.
Education/Experience
Minimum required: Education

    • Minimum bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree.
Years of Experience:

    • 1-2 years of experience in higher education and/or data science or data reporting related position.
Preferred: Education

    • Master\'s degree in Information Systems, Data Science, Statistics, Educational Measurements, or other related field.
Years of Experience:

    • 3-5 years of experience in a data reporting related position.
Skills abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications: Required

    • A commitment to, and understanding of, student success in higher education, including an understanding of the data that undergirds student success metrics and research.
    • Experience with any data related programming language such as SQL, Python, R.
    • Understanding of data warehousing architecture and methodology
    • Data visualization experience with Tableau or similar tool.
    • Strong attention to detail and dedication to accuracy as well as an ability to think critically and problem solve effectively.
    • Excellent communication skills are critical to the success of this position, including interpersonal, verbal and written communication to work well with departments, colleges, and other campus entities. This person needs to be able to communicate technical information to many people who may or may not have technical expertise.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with other data analysts within the department as well as data teams and departments across campus.
    • Ability to complete tasks accurately with minimal direction and in a timely manner.
    • Ability to work well in a team to both lead and be led by peers in projects.
    • An ability to learn and implement new technology in a timely manner.
    • Effective training skills workiing with a wide range of users with various levels of technical ability.
    • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and enforce University Policies related to data privacy and security.
Preferred

    • Advanced experience with any data related programming language such as SQL, Python, R
    • More than 1 year experience with Tableau or similar tool
    • Intermediate level statistical skills
    • User design methodology. This person needs to be able to actively listen to those requesting data to understand what they want and design a reporting experience that matches the needs and abilities of those using the data.
Knowledge or familiarity with:

    • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
    • Knowledge of data types and formatting standards within SQL server environments
    • University policies and procedures
    • Academic Information Management (AIM) system
