Job Description




ERM is seeking an Associate to join our Asset Decarbonization and Energy Transition Strategy team. Candidate may be located anywhere in the United States or Canada with reasonable access to a major airport with direct flights to Denver and Houston.

In this role, you will be joining an emerging ERM North America practice area on the ground floor. You will be able and expected to contribute meaningfully to shaping and growing ERM\xe2\x80\x99s service offerings to private sector companies, on the topic of energy transition investments and decarbonization of operations.

ERM is a private equity owned, pureplay environmental consulting firm with approximately 8,000 global employees (as of early 2023). ERM provides strategic and technical advisory services to client companies on the topics of corporate sustainability; decarbonization and energy transition; capital project delivery; climate risk assessment and management; social performance; environmental permitting; environmental compliance and remediation; and transaction due diligence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Delivery

  • Collaboratively develop and articulate methodologies and detailed scopes of work for proposed and accepted client engagements
  • Identify data sources and collect primary and secondary information necessary to execute client project work
  • Create, structure, and act as first author for client deliverables (Word, PPT, Excel), while coordinating closely with the ERM Partner in charge of the project and employing best practices in QA
  • Take primary responsibility for performing the research and analysis on projects. Confer frequently with senior staff about first-of-a-kind analyses and to discuss provisional/emerging conclusions. Recognize when it is valuable to involve specialists from other departments at ERM for advice or to bring into the project team. Depending on the type of analysis involved and the evolution of the team composition over time, identify opportunities to delegate simpler tasks to more junior staff.


Project and Client Management
  • Manage projects (timeline and budget), from initial scoping and client kickoff meeting, through project milestones, to final client deliverable, followed by internal capture/sharing of lessons learned
  • Extend the resources of senior staff by serving as the primary day-to-day point of contact for the client, escalating questions and concerns as appropriate


Team Management and Collaboration
  • Manage and mentor junior consultants assigned to your projects/team, with a supportive and positive approach that fosters employee satisfaction as well as high-quality deliverables
  • Proactively engage and network with other ERM staff regionally and globally, for knowledge sharing, market monitoring, and business development coordination
  • Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, research organizations, and opinion leaders
  • Help identify, recruit, and evaluate junior and peer candidates to join the team


Business Development
  • Participate in business development meetings with clients to amplify ERM credibility on understanding of companies, industries, technologies, markets, and problem-solving approaches
  • Support business development efforts by producing pitch decks, client background research, and formal proposals.


REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree
  • (A plus) Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in business, finance, economics, environmental science, or related subject


Professional experience:
  • 3-5 years of work experience in the energy sector
    • Professional/financial services (management consulting, private equity, investment banking)
    • Relevant not-for-profit or governmental organization
    • Operating company (electricity/fuel producer/distributor, or major industrial consumer)


Subject matter knowledge:
  • Broad fluency in the range of commercial, economic, financial, regulatory/legal, scientific and engineering issues that motivate and shape market activity and corporate investment decisions in the ongoing energy transition in North America.
  • Familiarity with all decarbonization pathways \xe2\x80\x93 including how they interrelate, to which GHG-emissions sources each applies, and their respective technical readiness trajectory, cost trajectory, risks, and practical implementation considerations.
    • (A plus) A deeper understanding of hydrogen production (from water, methane, biomass); the primary existing and projected industrial uses of hydrogen as a fuel and process feedstock; hydrogen-based fuels (ammonia, e-fuels); carbon capture; engineered carbon removal; electrification (of transportation and/or
  • Comfortable taking initiative in an unstructured and fluid work environment
  • Collaborative, open-minded, and flexible in identifying appropriate solutions customized to individual client situations and objectives
    • Data- and logic-driven inductive reasoning industrial processes); clean power generation (including less mature technologies such as advanced nuclear and novel geothermal, plus concepts around distribution, storage, and backup power); and emerging climate tech.
  • Knowledge of and keen interest in the mining, heavy industrial, clean fuel production (ammonia, methanol, liquid biofuel, biogas, e-fuel, hydrogen), and/or electric power sectors.


Analytical skills:
  • A knack for organizing, abstracting from, and distilling signal from noise in unstructured qualitative information and data
  • Advanced Excel (e.g., Pivot tables, INDEX, MATCH, OFFSET)
  • (A plus) Experience with probabilistic projection modeling using Monte Carlo simulation (@RISK, Crystal Ball)
  • Advanced PowerPoint (ability to efficiently produce polished, client-ready, well-designed diagrams and decks)
  • (A plus) Facility with data analytics, data visualization, and/or business intelligence tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL, Power BI)


Work style:
  • Clear communicator who can shape and deliver messages to clients at an executive level
  • Comfortable juggling multiple client engagements on multiple topic areas in parallel
  • Desire to work on a growing and geographically distributed team
  • Passion for doing our part as consultants to help clients address the greatest problem of our time


The typical hiring range for this role is [$70,000 to $83,276]. This is the typical hiring range we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee\xe2\x80\x99s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs. This job is also eligible for bonus pay.
