Safety Specialist III (SR-24)
$5,713 - $6,682/month
A Safety Specialist III plans, organizes and coordinates City-wide safety and accident prevention programs; participates in long-range planning and initial development of overall safety programs for the City and County of Honolulu; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy Information:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of Human Resources, Industrial Safety & Worker\'s Compensation Division, located in Honolulu. Under the general direction of the Division Chief, this position participates in the planning, development and administration of the accident prevention and safety training programs for the City and conducts various inspections of City work places, equipment, and facilities to ensure compliance with Federal OSHA and State HIOSH laws and regulations. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Planning, organizing, developing and conducting a variety of complex City-wide safety and accident prevention programs;
  • Preparing material and visual aids to promote safety and facilitate training;
  • Organizing and conducting safety meetings and training classes;
  • Preparing safety reports, analyzing accidents and injuries and conduct special studies on industrial accident trends and other safety related matters;
  • Developing and implementing special safety training programs and tailgate lesson plans for use by operating departments and agencies;
  • Conducting inspections of City-owned or leased facilities, other work areas, work projects and operations involving City employees, City vehicles, machines, devices, apparatus and equipment for compliance and conformity with safety codes, rules and laws, and practices to ensure that safe work practices are used, hazardous conditions are eliminated to the extent practicable and that personal protective equipment is available and used properly, and makes recommendations for corrective action as appropriate;
  • Investigating industrial accidents or incidents, injuries, workers\' compensation cases, etc. to determine causes and responsibilities and provide recommendations to eliminate similar accidents;
  • Develop and implement City policies, procedures, and guidelines for various health and safety issues to comply with the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Law and Administrative Rules;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in business administration, public administration, or a related field.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor\'s degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor\'s degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Four (4) years of experience in industrial safety and accident prevention activities.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of industrial and construction accident hazards and methods of correction and prevention; industrial safety devices and equipment; safety education and publicity media, principles, methods, and practices; and safety inspection principles, practices, and procedures. Such experience must also have demonstrated the ability to plan, organize, and coordinate an effective safety and accident prevention program.

Non-Qualifying Experience: Having the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as qualifying for the position. Your overall experience must have been of sufficient scope, level, and responsibility to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the Safety Specialist III position.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid appropriate driver\'s license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION:
