Program Manager for UNC HIV Cure Center and Martin Delaney Collaboratory: CARE

With the Director of the Center and the Principal Investigator of the MDC, is manager of the collaborative research group, accountable for the progress of the MDC with the aim of developing treatments to eradicate HIV-1 infection.

  • Will work in a dynamic matrixed research environment to assemble, direct, and monitor the activities of a team of independent scientists with diverse cutting-edge functional expertise, with the aim of developing new therapeutic approaches to eradicate HIV infection for pre-clinical and clinical evaluation.
  • With the Director/PI, sets the strategy and direction of the center and CARE ensuring that it functions synergistically to accelerate development HIV eradication therapies.
  • Sets annual project goals, milestones, and priorities, aligned with goals.
  • Ensures projects are tracked to milestones, proposing and managing the annual budget.
  • Coordinates and manages the efforts of the Project Teams, collecting information from the various members to create and communicate an overall view of the status of, and best directions forward.
  • Prepares written documentation that describes in detail the objectives, rationale and methodology of the project, and potentially proposes new project initiatives.
  • Reviews and integrates concepts that arise from the scientific staff into a unitary, cohesive, well-reasoned proposal. Identifies the personnel, equipment, consultants and other resources necessary to carry out projects.
  • Fosters the development of the professional level members of the project team and provides guidance to other project leaders.
  • Responsible for presenting projects results and summaries to various management levels and scientific review groups. Specifically, initiates and chairs regular project reviews
  • Provides input for the performance assessment of all core team members. Provides team members with ongoing performance feedback
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor\'s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Ph.D. and/or M.D. (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Virology, Immunology, or related fields).
  • Direct experience in HIV research, with track record of scientific innovation and/or leadership.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to analyze and integrate information from diverse disciplines, as well as a demonstrated ability to develop and advance new vaccine concepts.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • 5 years post-graduate research experience including at least 2 years experience working in academic, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or vaccines industries for position as the scientific project leader & manager of an advanced HIV research program.
  • Substantial publication record, and evidence of external collaborations in the broader scientific community.
