The Analytics and AI methods at Scale (AAIMS) group in the National Center for Computational Science (NCCS) is seeking driven and promising postdoctoral research associate(s) in the broad intersecting areas of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI at scale. Examples on areas of research interest include but not limited to:

  • NLP, Foundational model pre-training, human-in-loop reinforcement learning and fine-tuning.
  • Computational performance of AI/ML algorithms, including the ability to use modern computing hardware and software frameworks efficiently.
  • Data parallelism, model-parallelism, collective communication patterns and strategies for large-scale, distributed machine learning using frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Operational data (Power, energy, CPU/GPU utilization, job scheduling, large scale storage and I/O traces, system logs) analytics to enable data-driven intelligence and facility innovation.
  • AI algorithms for handling sensitive data using methods such as Federated Learning, Differential Privacy, and Secure Multiparty Computing, among others.
  • Visualization of large-scale HPC/AI discovery campaigns.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a variety of large-scale data analytics, and/or AI/ML-related research and projects.
  • Present and report research results, publish scientific results in peer reviewed conferences/journals in a timely fashion.

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
Preferred Requirements
  • Solid record of productive research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals, and/or open-source software development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
