This position is responsible for the enforcing parking restrictions in the downtown area. Under supervision and in accordance with procedures, patrols designated areas for parking violations; services and operates traffic guide vehicle; and assists with general office type work as assigned by the Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Patrols the downtown Amarillo area and enforces the City\xe2\x80\x99s parking codes.
  • Uses the License Plate Recognition System, monitors the video and photo data collected, and issues citations when a code has been violated.
  • Checks the police parking lot for unauthorized parking.
  • Reports traffic accidents and hazards.
  • Use handheld electronic ticket writer.
  • Downloads digital citations to the Municipal Court on a daily basis.
  • Issues parking tickets to illegally parked vehicles.
  • Helps Police officers direct the flow of traffic at accident scenes when needed.
  • Maintain records on activities.
  • Operates and maintains the assigned Amarillo Police Department Parking Enforcement Vehicle.
  • Accounts for all assigned City property, including equipment, vehicles, uniforms and the like.
  • Answer questions from public courteously and professionally.
  • Maintains positive public relations.
  • Testifies in Municipal Court when a person challenges his/her citation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to walk and mark the tires of a parked vehicle.
  • Ability to operate a standard transmission vehicle.
  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate on a radio and in person
  • Ability to carry out instructions with little supervision.
  • Ability to effectively testify in court
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language at a high school graduate level.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of city parking ordinances.
  • Ability to operate computers for word processing, accounting and other purposes.




Licenses/Certification



Required Qualifications

Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent plus 12 hours from an accredited college and previous experience as a Traffic Guide plus a minimum of one year previous experience in dealing with the public. Six months previous experience with a law enforcement agency and previous experience with computer based electronic parking enforcement camera systems preferred. Valid Texas Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License Required.


Prior to being accepted for this position, applicant must successfully complete a physical, and polygraph exam.

A Police Department employee must have an excellent reputation in order to maintain the public\xe2\x80\x99s trust in the Police Department. The following factors would automatically disqualify an applicant: Any felony conviction; Class A or B misdemeanor conviction within the last 5 years; discharge from military service with other than Under Honorable Conditions; any illegal possession or use of controlled substances, other than marijuana after 18 years of age, prior to 18 years, the Chief of Police will review on individual basis; use of marijuana over an extended period of time within the last three years, or any use of marijuana within 1 year prior to submission of the application for this position; three traffic accidents in the past 3 years in which you were at fault; eight traffic citations for moving violations within the past three years, or three traffic citation for moving violations within the last year; driver license presently suspended; history of bad debt.
