WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This position requires an individual to perform technical work performing analysis, comparison, and evaluation of fingerprints and latent prints. The individual in this position utilizes computer software and programs in the processing of information.
Major Duties
Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.


  • Processes inked and latent prints from crime scenes; collects and packages items of evidence and ensures proper handling in accordance with legal requirements and City policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes latent prints for sufficiency submitted by personnel and other law enforcement agencies, compares identifiable latent prints to known exemplars, and issues reports on their findings.
  • Searches latent prints in Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems and renders expert testimony in court proceedings.
  • Provides instruction on the proper procedure for recording fingerprints.
  • Verifies the analysis of other examiners; compares and evaluates fingerprints and latent prints.
  • Receives and accounts for criminal evidence and impounded, lost, and abandoned property, process evidence and property.
  • Prepare and maintain criminal evidence and impounded property records and reports.
  • Maintains evidence lockers, keeping them in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Assumes responsibility for crime scene investigation activities during an assigned shift and on an on-call basis.
  • Examines crime scenes to document, preserve, collect, photograph, video and identify physical evidence.
  • Recovers fingerprints from crime scenes and evidence submitted.
  • Completes detailed crime scene reports.
  • Testifying in court proceedings; and other duties as assigned
  • Performs related work as assigned.


Minimum Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Associates degree in forensic science or related field or one (1) year of field experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Prior training in fingerprint classification/comparison or latent print analysis is preferred.
Prior latent print examination experience is preferred
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver\'s license with an acceptable driving history.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts objects up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and climbs ladders.
The work is typically performed in an office, at crime scenes, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Mathematics:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10\'s and 100\'s.
Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Language Ability :
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to
customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
In this position judgment is critical based on the fact that the employee is documenting, photographing, and collecting physical evidence at crime scenes.
The employee has access to the evidence rooms which contain all the stored police evidence.
Access to the AFIS/BIS system is strictly regulated by FDLE and users are limited.
