Job Description




Only applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements (listed below) will be placed on the eligible list.

This position collects and preserves evidence and performs scientific analysis of physical materials in the investigation of crimes for the Division of Criminal Investigation Crime Laboratory; performs related work as required. Performs forensic science analysis, research and training; crime scene work; speaks to and trains peace officers and fire fighters; court testimony and report writing. This position will be assigned to the Controlled Substance Identification Section of the laboratory and must meet the criteria listed below.

Travel across the state of Iowa may be required for courtroom testimony and continuing education, with the potential to be away from the Des Moines area overnight on occasion. General work hours will be Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., however courtroom testimony responsibilities may require hours outside of these times.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: At a minimum, a BA/BS degree or its equivalent degree in chemistry or a closely related physical science, biology, or forensic science related area. Preference will be given to candidates with a chemistry major or a strong academic background in chemistry in addition to previous GC/MS and HPLC experience. Applicants with experience in instrument maintenance would be helpful.

Ability to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety.

Selectives

953 Chemistry Degree
A bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry or a closely related physical science including the following college coursework: general chemistry and lab, two semesters of organic chemistry and labs, quantitative analysis and lab, and instrumental analysis and lab.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor\'s Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics or a closely related physical or natural laboratory science;

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of experience in a crime laboratory performing firearms identification, latent print identification, document examination, trace evidence, forensic toxicology, forensic serology, forensic photography, or crime scene investigation and forensic training, for one year (thirty semester hours) of the required education.

Additional Qualification Requirements

All applicants for this class must be able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation.

Applicants must be available to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
