Job Description


  • Coordinates district activities to ensure the efficient operation of the food service program.
  • Works with the contracted food service vendor and their employees to ensure contract requirements are met.
  • Ensures reporting and claiming procedures are followed.
  • 12 month position 6 hours per day 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM daily
  • Salary range: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
Job Summary:
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the District\xe2\x80\x99s food service program.
  • Develops and implements District-wide policies and procedures to assure compliance with Federal, State and Local laws and regulations.
  • Reviews, interprets, implements and supervises the meal program to ensure that regulations, policies and procedures of the United States Department of Agriculture\xe2\x80\x99s (USDA) National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and National School Breakfast Program (NSBP) are followed.
  • Maintains knowledge of incorporating foods from the USDA Commodities Program into the menu cycle and works with the contracted vendor to ensure the proper delivery, quality, freshness, variety and storage of food being served.
  • Assists in meal and menu planning with the contracted vendor to help ensure that all nutritional requirements of the NSLP and NSBP are met.
  • Interviews and makes recommendations for the hiring of District food service employees and assists the contracted vendor in maintaining proper staffing.
  • Ensures that all food service employees complete the required 10 hours of annual certification training and continuing education per State and Federal requirements.
  • Completes the evaluation and provides oversight for all District food service employees and assists the contracted vendor in the evaluation of their employees.
  • Reviews all invoices, bills and purchase orders for accuracy before presenting them to the Business Office for payment.
  • Supervises the delivery, sale and counting of breakfast, lunch and milk purchases, and prepares bank deposits for the meal and milk programs, as needed.
  • Monitors and supervises data input and prepares monthly reports for State and Federal reimbursements related to the free and reduced price meal programs and the special milk program. Ensures compliance with current regulations for these programs and maintains records in preparation for State and Federal audits.
  • Prepares and submits monthly reports/claims, as required, for the NSLP and NSBP.
  • Processes District Fee Waiver Requests and Direct Free Lunch Applications.
  • Visits all lunchrooms periodically to maintain high standards of health and safety, and to suggest possible improvements in operations.
  • Works with District Office Staff, School Administrators, Parents and Community Members to resolve issues, address concerns and improve operations.
  • Assists food service personnel with emergencies and fills in when necessary.
  • Prepares bid documents for the food service program and submits them to ISBE for review and approval; identifies potential bidders, sends out bids, answers bidder questions, evaluates responses, prepares recommendations, and completes contract review and execution with support from the Assistant Superintendent for Business Services and other District staff.
  • Coordinates activities related to the payment system for meals and milk, both E-Pay and Cash/Check payments, for all schools, and monitors overdue balances and past due amounts. Communicates with the Principals, Secretaries and District Office staff regarding overdue balances, and assists in their collection or elimination.
  • Prepares materials for the meal program in English and Spanish for school offices.
  • Works with County and State Health Departments and coordinates the required two annual County health inspections for each school kitchen.
  • Works with the Business Office to ensure costs associated with food programs are properly allocated and that a budget is properly developed and monitored.
  • Maintains Junior High Snack Bar program and Al a Carte offerings at all schools.
  • Submits school lunch, breakfast, milk and snack applications to ISBE annually.
  • Updates the Food Services Department web page with current information and posts all menus and nutritional information monthly.
  • Works with the Director of Community Engagement to post resources and information annually to publicize and support the District food service programs.
  • Maintains and procures all required capital equipment to support the food service programs and budgets for purchases and maintenance accordingly.
  • Coordinates food and drink for special District events and functions.
  • Monitors and provides snacks and supplies for the Pre-K/EC programs.
  • Work with School Secretaries at each building to ensure that all the required food service information is entered into Skyward related to meal program status.
  • Provides Smart Snack options to schools for special student events.
  • Coordinates the Local Wellness Committee and sets up meetings and agendas, as required by State and/or Federal guidelines.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications: * Either a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in food and nutrition services or management, family and consumer sciences, culinary arts, or a related field OR a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in any field and two (2) or more years of relevant experience with school nutrition programs OR an Associate\xe2\x80\x99s degree with an academic concentration in food and nutrition services or management, family and consumer sciences, culinary arts, or a related field and two (2) or more years of relevant experience with school nutrition programs.
  • At least 10 hours of training and continuing professional education annually, including 8 or more hours of food safety training.
  • Certification in food service sanitation through the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including word processing, e-mail, data base, internet and spread sheets.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
