Job Description


JOB PURPOSE:

The Executive Director - CNIO is a senior nurse executive who works with the Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) and senior nursing, clinical, medical, quality/regulatory, and operational leadership to develop and implement informatics strategy to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and experience of nursing and clinician practice in support of Piedmont Healthcare\'s mission and vision. It is expected that this individual will develop and implement nursing informatics strategy for the health system. This may include leading efforts to implement virtual nursing solutions, reduce duplication and documentation burden, enhance adoption of workflow efficiency tools, help define standard EHR work for nursing, and assist in streamlining optimization. Reporting to the CHIO, the ED-CNIO will serve as the key advisor related to nursing practice, nursing informatics, and ancillary clinical areas. You will also have an indirect reporting relationship to the system Chief Nurse Executive and participate in the nursing leadership council. The primary role of the ED-CNIO is to serve as the strategic liaison between Information Services (IS), nursing and ancillary departments to identify, develop, and implement informatics strategies to support quality across the continuum of care. This role is responsible for the strategic direction for nursing informatics across the health system to advance the practice of nursing, clinician experience using the Epic, and improve the patient experience. In collaboration with other members of the system Informatics leadership team and Chief Nurse Officers (CNOs), you will develop clinical systems strategies that optimize the use of the electronic health record (EHR) and associated technologies for nurses, physicians, and other multidisciplinary care providers. Working closely with application teams, service line leaders, training and information services leadership. The ED-CNIO and CMIO(s) function as dyad partners. The ED-CNIO will lead through influence and work with leaders across the health system and across care settings.

  • Follow and understand major trends related to regulation, payors, clinical systems, information technology, vendors, informatics, and communications as they affect healthcare delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Strategic liaison for health IT efforts representing nursing and clinician needs.
  • Develop strategy and key tactics for transforming the effectiveness, efficiency, and technology experience for nursing and clinicians in coordination with overall health informatics strategy.
  • Combines knowledge of patient care, informatics concepts, change management, process improvement, and clinical operations to support quality patient care and professional practice.
  • Remains current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and is able to assess how available solutions may meet organizational needs.
  • Collaborates with nursing leaders in planning, analysis, problem solving, and execution.
  • Works with physicians, nurses, other clinicians, and IT staff to gain support for designing processes and applications that maximize their time and communication abilities.
  • Acts as a change agent who promotes the use of health IT to improve patient safety by designing, developing, implementing, and educating on decision support tools.
  • Strong understanding operational workflows with the ability to discern how technology can impact clinical practice and how clinical practice can best leverage technology.
  • Collaborate with Epic trainers, training leadership, and nursing educators to optimize physician and clinical support training for both new and existing employees.
  • Enhance patient safety and quality of care in line with organizational goals.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

MSN or Masters in Informatics or equivalent experience

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Five (5 Years) clinical experience

Five (5 Years) informatics experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Three (3 Years) leadership experience

Senior leadership responsibility for improving nursing practice through informatics.

Expert level knowledge of Epic nursing workflows is a must.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

DNP or PhD in Nursing/Informatics, preferred. AHIC certification is a plus. Strong knowledge of health care industry trends in informatics, technology, nursing practice, and clinical operations. Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:

Current and active RN license.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

ANCC - Nursing Informatics, CPHIMS optional
