Job Description


Min Rate = $201,600.00 / Max Rate = $302,400.00. *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is an integral part of the executive team of the hospital and reports to the hospital President. The CNO is responsible for organizational-wide nursing practice including nursing care delivery, nursing quality and safety, nursing education and professional development, and nursing well-being through systems improvement, innovation, technology management, ethics, and research as well as other organizational aspects of nursing. In partnership with formal leaders and staff, the CNO helps ensure a focus on highly reliable care and engagement of patients, families and employees throughout entire organization and the University of Vermont Health Network. He/she is the voice for nursing\xe2\x80\x99s unique professional practice contributions and ensures nursing practice partners and aligns with the other disciplines to promote patient centered care. The CNO collaborates and leads initiatives across the University of Vermont Health Network to ensure high quality experience for patients, people and community.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Creates and aligns a vision for nursing in support of the organizational strategic vision
  • Responsible for the oversight of nursing care delivery including elements of patient satisfaction.
  • Provides leadership and challenges the status quo in building loyalty and commitment throughout the organization
  • Partners to establish effective processes for career growth and development of emerging nursing leaders to include identifying resources and opportunities to support goal achievement and accountabilities for assessing individual progress towards goals
  • Encourages life-long learning and promotes organization-wide boundary spanning throughout all work
  • Ensures shared governance structure is active and supported throughout organization
  • Collaborate with Regional and Network Recruitment teams to ensure the development of a strong nursing workforce
  • Establishes measurable, realistic nursing practice outcomes with timelines and drives accountability in outcomes
  • Sets the standard for the utilization of evidence based practice and research in determining practice and policies
Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment
  • Maintains current knowledge and compliance regarding nurse practice act and NYS Education Department standards on professional nursing practice
  • Builds capacity to evaluate, adopt, and translate valid research into practice and applies knowledge to formation/revision of evidence based nursing practice policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Partners in the implementation of consistent monitoring processes across the organization to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Provides learning opportunities for leadership and staff across the care settings and populations
  • Articulates current literature findings and facilitates discussion on best practices serving as a nursing practice content expert
  • Contributes to a learning environment around healthcare economics/policy.
Operations, Communication and Relationship Building
  • Provides leadership, direction and coordination for operations in the reporting departments with over sight of fiscal management of operational budgets, variance monitoring and cost control performance/resource, performance against clinical benchmarks, and patient, employee and provider satisfaction benchmarks, process improvement initiatives for division, and maintaining or exceeding compliance with regulatory guidelines for division
  • Effectively represents professional nursing practice and a patient care perspective to governing bodies and external audiences.
  • Builds credibility, trust and nursing influence as a representative of the organization, both internally and externally
  • Utilizes strong project management and group process to aligns and integrate stakeholders
  • Builds a strong network internally and externally to give visibility and voice to nursing practice at CVPH.
  • Implements strategies to build interprofessional relationships across the continuum between medical staff, nursing and other disciplines
Business Skills
  • Participates in allocation of resources; deciding among competing needs of organization
  • Articulates financial health of organization, particularly as it is influenced by nursing and other clinical decisions and outcomes
  • Responsible for nursing workforce planning and employment decisions
  • Leads strategies to strengthen Nurse Engagement based on the interpretation and evaluation of ongoing nurse engagement survey/employee engagement survey results
  • Active partner in all aspects of alignment work in the collective bargaining environments
  • Communicates nursing unique professional practice contributions and how they align with the other disciplines.
  • Determines priorities for capital allocation decisions, use of new technology for clinical integration, growth decisions, product or service-line decisions and centralization decisions
  • Is a strong voice for patients and caregivers in strategic planning
  • In partnership with ISS evaluates and lead activities of nursing informatics plan
Serve as a member of the hospital senior administrative team to include:
  • Collaborate with operations to resolve patient care, clinical practice, staff and other issues as they arise. Participate in process improvement initiatives, to ensure good practices exist that balances the needs of the patients, the medical community, staff and leadership.
  • Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officers of all UVM Health Network hospitals to ensure appropriate location of care for shared patients;
  • Works in conjunction with the President, Chief Operating Officer, the Associate Vice President of Human Resources, and UVM Health Network Human Resources Shared Services and academic partners to foster growth of the nursing workforce in a manner necessary to meet the ongoing health needs of the region;
  • Serve as a key Nursing resource to throughout the design, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the hospital information systems and technology
  • Serves as a member (Ex Officio) of the Board of Directors;
  • Participates or delegates participation in key UVM Health Network committees, including Quality Committee, UVM Health Network Quality Committee, Epic Clinical Governance and other committees as needed.
Qualifications
  • Masters of Science in Nursing required. Doctoral preparation in nursing preferred.
  • Active NYS RN licensure required.
  • Executive Nursing Practice certification preferred.
  • 5-10 years of progressive healthcare experience required.
