Overview

TITLE: DIRECTOR OF SUPPORT SERVICES \xe2\x80\x93 B.R.A.G.

REPORTS TO:VICE PRESIDENT, B.R.A.G. CURE VIOLENCE

LOCATION:Jerome Ave., Bronx, NY

HOURS:35 Hours/Week, Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Support Services oversees a diverse portfolio of the program and works with program staff, community residents, businesses, and community-based organizations of all types to implement strategies in support of the B.R.A.G. Cure Violence programs to reduce and prevent shootings and killings. The Director of Support Services assists the Vice President to coordinate hospital response, school conflict mediation, educational/vocational services, therapeutics, and music studio and youth employment programming in addition to directing its staff and conducting community outreach. Actively create and sustain partnerships with elected officials and between community and public safety-oriented organizations in NYC neighborhoods to ensure access to existing geographical City Hall initiatives.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• With the Vice President assist in the implementation and supervision of B.R.A.G.\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital Response, D.O.E., Ed/Voc, Therapeutics, Music Recording Studio, and Anti-Gun Violence Employment programs. Direct these programs consistent with contractual mandates, standards, and procedures set by Good Shepherd Services (GSS), the Mayor\xe2\x80\x99s Office of Criminal Justice\xe2\x80\x99s Office to Prevent Gun Violence (MOCJ/OPGV), the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), the Division of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)and the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
• Recruit, screen and hire culturally appropriate staff utilizing hiring panels.
• Reach out to community agencies (including faith-based community leaders, residents, businesses, and organizations) and continuously work to establish and strengthen relationships.
• Provide program overviews to Precinct Community Councils, Community Boards, and other such agencies as appropriate.
• Supervise mid-level and line staff, including planning daily and weekly activities for and with staff, to ensure staff are present in places and at times to be able to intervene on the street most effectively.
• With staff, review shootings and other significant violent occurrences to plan immediate community response and other appropriate interventions.
• Investigate the causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups.
• Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with young people, residents, businesses, and community groups including communities of faith and agencies providing services within the catchment area.
• Represent the program at all relevant community meetings and mobilize all to develop coordinated anti-gun/anti-violence messaging.
• Organize and lead regular mobilization activities within the community, including community events, response to individual shootings, rallies, planning, and coordination meetings, and public education activities.
• Engage, motivate, and coordinate the efforts of core and other volunteers.
• Development and distribution of public education materials, including flyers, posters, stickers, and social media postings to promulgate a \xe2\x80\x9cno guns, no shootings\xe2\x80\x9d message.
• Work with the community, other outreach programs, and local law enforcement to gain information that may be helpful in preventing further violence.
• Document and approve all work including shootings and acts of violence prevented, risk notes, and referrals using MOCJ/OPGV approved database plus coordinate and review staff documentation.
• Identify youth who are gang members and those at risk for joining gangs and intervene in their lives through risk management to aid in solving current problems and preventing future ones.
• Provide participants with support and linkages to programs and opportunities in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
• Attend conferences, symposiums, trainings, and meetings with law enforcement, prosecution, probation, and agencies such as community boards providing opportunities to coordinate efforts to reduce violence.
• Maintain regular participation in meetings coordinated by the MOCJ/OPGV, DOHMH, and GSS internal meetings as required.
• Manage all functions of the B.R.A.G. HR, D.O.E., EdVoc, Therapeutics, Studio and AGVEP as well as the supervisor/coordinator/technician/consultant or social worker of each department.
• Assure that the programs are informed by, and its staff trained in, trauma-informed practice (TIP), which may include adoption of the Sanctuary Model of TIP.
• Facilitate Groups when necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree required with minimum two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities
• In-depth knowledge of the Bronx 46th, 47th and 52nd Precinct neighborhoods
• Demonstrated ability to perform effective community outreach and mobilize community efforts
• Experience and knowledge of at-risk and gang-involved young people, including skills for working effectively with high-risk teenagers and young adults
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and collaboratively with all levels of staff, program participants, and community members
• Ability to work a highly flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to walk 30 blocks and travel by public transportation
• Criminal justice history preferred but may not be under current criminal justice supervision
• Commitment to working toward positive community change
• Valid NYS driver\xe2\x80\x99s license strongly preferred
• Bilingual Spanish-English preferred
• Commitment to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed youth and family development perspective
