TITLE: COMMUNITY COORDINATOR/OUTREACH WORKER \xe2\x80\x93 B.R.A.G. NORTH EDENWALD CURE VIOLENCE

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR, B.R.A.G. NORTH CURE VIOLENCE

LOCATION: Boston Road, Bronx, NY

HOURS: 35 Hours/Week, Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

The Cure Violence Community Coordinator/Outreach Worker works with program staff, community residents, businesses and community-based organizations of all types to implement strategies to reduce and prevent shootings and killings in selected \xe2\x80\x9chot spot\xe2\x80\x9d areas within the Bronx 47th Precinct, which comprises: Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville and Fishbay. The Community Coordinator/Outreach Worker assists the Program Director to coordinate monthly events, mobilization and public education activities in addition to assisting the Director in supervising other program staff and conducting community outreach. Actively maintain a riskload, create and sustain partnerships between community and public safety-oriented organizations in NYC neighborhoods to ensure access to existing geographical City Hall initiatives.

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • With the Director assist in the implementation of and supervise the CURE Violence Program consistent with contractual mandates, standards and procedures set by Good Shepherd Services (GSS), the Mayor\xe2\x80\x99s Office of Criminal Justice\xe2\x80\x99s Office to Prevent Gun Violence and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
  • With the Director meet with community stakeholders to strategize, determine and facilitate monthly events designed to deliver the program\xe2\x80\x99s message of peace.
  • Develop relationships with key community individuals in need of Outreach Worker services. Enroll, provide said services and actively maintain a riskload of 5 to 8 participants.
  • With the Director recruit, screen and hire culturally appropriate staff utilizing hiring panels.
  • With the Director and independently reach out to community agencies (including faith-based community leaders, residents, businesses and organizations) and continuously work to establish and strengthen relationships.
  • With the Director and independently provide program overviews to Precinct Community Councils, Community Boards and other such agencies as appropriate.
  • Assist Director in supervising staff, including planning daily and weekly activities for and with staff, to ensure staff are present in places and at times to be able to most effectively interact with the community.
  • With the Director and staff, review shootings and other significant violent occurrences to plan immediate community response events.
  • Explore the causes of shootings/killings to create messaging to reject violence and retaliation in the community.
  • Represent the program at all relevant community meetings and mobilize all to develop coordinated Anti-Gun/anti-violence messaging. Development and distribution of public education materials, including flyers, posters, stickers and social media postings to promulgate a \xe2\x80\x9cno guns, no shootings\xe2\x80\x9d message.
  • With the Director, organize and lead regular mobilization activities within the community, including community events, rallies, planning and coordination meetings, and public education activities.
  • Assist the Director in engaging, motivating, and coordinating the efforts of core and other volunteers.
  • Work with the community, other outreach programs and local law enforcement (obtain only) to gain information that may be helpful in creating safe spaces.
  • Document all work including intakes, events, risk notes, referrals using MOCJ/OPGV approved database plus coordinate and review staff documentation.
  • Identify youth who are gang members and those at risk for joining gangs and intervene in their lives through case management to aid in solving current problems and preventing future ones.
  • Provide clients with support and linkages to programs and opportunities in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
  • Attend meetings with law enforcement (obtain only), prosecution (obtain only), probation, and agencies such as community boards providing opportunities to coordinate efforts to reduce violence.
  • Maintain regular participation in meetings coordinated by the MOCJ-OPGV, DOHMH, and GSS internal meetings as required.
  • Assure that the program is informed by, and its staff trained in trauma-informed practice (TIP), which may include adoption of the Sanctuary Model of TIP.
  • Facilitate Groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • An in-depth knowledge of the Bronx 47th Precinct neighborhoods
  • Residence within the area strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effective community outreach and mobilize community efforts
  • Experience and knowledge of at-risk and gang-involved young people, including skills for working effectively with high-risk teenagers and young adults
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to communicate clearly, effectively and collaboratively with all levels of staff, program participants and community members
  • Proficiency with computers and hand-held devices, including the ability to use databases and common office programs
  • Ability to work highly flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to walk 30 blocks and travel by public transportation
  • Ability to pass drug screening
  • Criminal justice history preferred
  • Commitment to working toward positive community change
  • Valid, clean NYS driver\xe2\x80\x99s license strongly preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish-English and & Patois a plus.
  • Commitment to work from a strength based, trauma informed youth and family development perspective
