The University of Washington Press has an outstanding opportunity for an Acquisitions Editor.

The Acquisitions Editor will join a terrific team of publishing professionals. Based in Seattle, the press is part of a vibrant book culture, with a wealth of independent bookstores, museums, cultural centers, and book supporters throughout the region.

Acquisitions Areas:

Acquisitions areas include Native and Indigenous studies; critical ethnic studies; women\xe2\x80\x99s, gender, and sexuality studies; environmental history and environmental justice; and Asian studies; with the opportunity to contribute to and build distinguished lists in other areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Actively recruit new book proposals and manuscripts by contacting prospective authors.
Develop and sustain a strong network of press authors, prospective authors, series editors, and advisers.
Attend select conferences, and travel to secure new projects.
Correspond with prospective authors to answer questions about the publication process.
Recommend revisions to authors of manuscripts under review; work with authors on implementing revisions.
Prepare financial information for manuscripts proposed for publication.
Negotiate contracts in consultation with Director and Editorial Director.
Acquire and transmit 20-25 new manuscripts per fiscal year.
Solicit and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts in assigned areas and determine their suitability for publication.
Identify and engage outside readers to provide peer review.
Participate in weekly acquisitions and biweekly interdepartmental editorial meetings to review proposals and manuscripts, and recommend further review, rejection, or presentation to the press committee for formal approval.
Prepare materials for presentation to the faculty press committee.
Attend press committee meetings.
Work collaboratively with other press departments to develop appropriate and effective publishing plans for titles acquired.
Identify and help secure grants and title subsidies to underwrite publication costs in collaboration with press grant-writing and development staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

B.A. in the humanities or social sciences or a discipline related to assigned acquisitions areas.
2 years of acquisitions experience with a scholarly or trade publisher.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Commitment to using an understanding of the diversity of human experiences in in supporting the press\xe2\x80\x99s editorial program.
Sensitivity to language relating to race, gender, sexuality, and ability/disability.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate work or advanced degree.
Demonstrated success in list building.
Demonstrated engagement with equity, inclusion, and justice work.


Position requires travel to conferences over weekends and attendance at publication events outside normal working hours.
