Job Description


Award Winning, Independent Book Publisher with approx 5,000 titles seeking Managing Editor.

The Book Managing Editor position manages book projects through the publishing process:

  • From title acquisition to metadata creation to retaining freelancers for cover design
  • Retaining freelance line and copy editors for manuscript edits
  • Completing a press-ready file
  • Presenting the title to sales and marketing. Manages overall book project finances in accordance with budgets set by publisher
We have an SOP with detailed steps for the process.
Experience: we are looking for editors with experience in books specifically. We have Ingram Publisher Services as our distributor and so we use their systems to support the publishing process. if you have familiarity with Ingram\'s systems such as Coresource, iQ, LSI, that is a plus.
Qualities: We are looking for someone who can manage multiple projects simultaneously at varying degrees of completion, who is:
  • Very organized
  • Capable of multi-tasking, can work to a deadline
  • Has experience with online portals and systems
  • Loves books, reads books
  • Understand whatever the immediate objective is and apply a "can do" attitude
  • Goal-oriented
  • Timetable driven, but is positive, cool and is a good collaborator
  • Someone who is relaxed working with deadlines, who can manage a project and keep the various people meetings their responsibilities in a kind way, who is eager to learn processes and systems and who is excited to learn new things.

Responsibilities:
  • Take book projects from beginning to end
  • Beginning starts with title acquisition: manuscript evaluation and issuing publishing agreement. End is the publishing of the book
  • Communicate with author, production, design and publisher to walk a project through the process steps
Qualifications:
  • Must have project management experience
  • Experience with book publishing
  • Experience with editing book manuscripts
  • Understanding of the book market and how a manuscript would fit into the market
  • Experience with book metadata
