Position Purpose
Reporting to the Outagamie County WIC Director/Supervisor and under general guidance and direction of the Breastfeeding Coordinator/Peer Counselor Program Coordinator, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. This position is part-time with benefits available for approximately 24 hrs a week. This position will be primarily in office with availability outside standard office hours to participants as needed. Flexible hours during standard WIC clinic hours:
8am - 4:30 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
8am - 6pm Tuesday.
Additional availability required outside of office hours to meet the needs of the participants.
Possibilities of remote work. After hour contacts and calls would be provided remotely. This position may be able to work remotely for trainings.

Key Responsibilities
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Supports WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in person at WIC clinic visits, via text and/or telephone. May also include out of office support as determined by WIC program and community needs.
  • Provides basic breastfeeding education and support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, including the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers. The Breastfeeding peer counselor helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns to get a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Maintains caseload of WIC participants, providing routine contacts as identified by WIC policy guidelines.
  • Maintains participant confidentiality per WIC and county policies.
  • Documents contacts timely in WIC ROSIE system based on WIC program standards.
  • Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the WIC breastfeeding coordinator, WIC Nutritionist, or WIC Registered Dietitian as appropriate.
  • Attends training sessions related to the WIC breastfeeding peer counselor position and program.
  • Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups with WIC nutrition staff and community partners.
  • Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as recommended.
  • Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor and/or Breastfeeding Coordinator.
  • May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and community events as needed.
  • Provides after hours support to clients as needed.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
  • Acknowledge and follow agency processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties with in the scope to the Peer program as assigned.

Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements
  • Current or former WIC participant within the last 5 years
  • Successfully breastfed at least one infant for a minimum of 6 months within the last 5 years.
  • Show enthusiasm towards breastfeeding.
  • Complete the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training within the first year of hire and obtain 25 hours of continuing education every five years.
  • Completes training on WIC, including Wisconsin WIC orientation and annual trainings, and ROSIE navigation and documentation.
  • Attends quarterly State BFPC calls and breastfeeding trainings, as appropriate, to receive continuing education.

Required or Preferred Skills
  • Ability to transport oneself from project clinics and community events.
