Description

Under supervision, assists in delivering 4-H programming to rural schools in Humboldt County during in-school hours; Assists the Volunteer and Events Specialist - 4-H Program Coordinator and performs other work as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Volunteer and Events Assistant is assigned to the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office and works under the supervision of University staff performing a variety of project development and support activities. This position differs from the Volunteer and Events Specialist position in that the former assists the Volunteer and Events Specialist in the successful outcome of all County-wide 4-H programs and activities as directed by the Extension Agent.

Supervision Exercised and Received:

Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

Examples of Duties

(Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

  • Assists with recruitment efforts for 4-H members and adult volunteers (focus on rural areas).
  • Continues implementation of the 4-H rural schools (Paradise Valley, Orovada, McDermitt, Kings River, and Denio), in-school 4-H program; Develops scheduling for the school year; Develops lessons (STEM based) and delivers/implements to youth during in-school hours.
  • Develops, implements, and facilitates summer 4-H Day camp activities.
  • Assist with preparations for the 4-H component of the county fair and any other related shows such as, 4-H horse show, 4-H small animal show, 4-H static display set-up, for fair, State 4-H Expo etc. (help with planning, weigh-ins, check-in, judging, set-up, check-out, take down, etc.)
  • Performs other duties related to 4-H or office program efforts as assigned.
  • Represents the County and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (KSAs are the attributes required to perform a job; generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.)

Knowledge of:
  • 4-H or similar youth development or educational program.
  • Positive youth development.
  • Modern office procedures and methods, including computer and productivity software use of programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.
Skill to:
  • Maintain an organized work environment.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records in accordance with local, state, and federal records retention schedules.
  • Communicate well with youth and adults verbally and through written means.
  • Maintain and deepen working relationships with community partners, rural schools, etc.
  • Drive in a variety of rural driving conditions.
Ability to:
  • Successfully interact and work with youth ranging from 5 to 19 years of age and adult volunteers, to meet the educational interests and needs of the youth.
  • Deliver 4-H program to schools, resource persons, and the public.
  • Present instructional materials, such as 4-H lesson plans and audio and visual aids.
  • Contribute to fostering a teamwork environment.
  • Work non-traditional hours, as requested or required.
  • Adapt and adjust programming and curriculum based on the abilities of each rural school.
  • Easily pivot and understand structure is a fluid situation with the youth in each school.
  • Plan ahead, create scheduling for rural school program and summer 4-H day camp activities.
  • Work as a team player and take direction well.
  • Drive to rural areas throughout Humboldt County.
  • Attend 4-H professional development trainings or other as suggested or required.
Required Certifications and Licenses: Possession of a valid driver\'s license or alternate means of travel.

Required to pass state and federal grade fingerprinting and background check.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and six months of general 4-H or other similar youth development program experience performing a variety of field and office clerical tasks, including the use of a computer or any combination of training and experience that would demonstrate the desired knowledge and abilities of the position.
