Position Summary

Develop seasonal non-leather materials for footwear and materials that extend Timberland\xe2\x80\x99s leadership position. Ensure materials are used efficiently across teams with reduced complexity and reduced cost\xe2\x80\x94Educates Timberland footwear teams on materials availability, functions, use, and benefits.

Ensure materials are on-time and accurate in prototype samples throughout seasonal milestones that meet cost targets and suit the production environment.

Materials Developer (NLX) (Global Timberland)

As a key member of our Material Development team, you will provide insights and suggestions and share information to deliver quality materials on time at the right cost for the intended performance use. You will report to the Senior Manager, Non-Leather Materials, and have strong internal contacts within our team as well as the following teams: Global Footwear Design, Color, Trends and Materials, Footwear Development, Engineering, Digital Product Creation, VF Asia organization, Quality Assurance, Marketing, Sustainability, and Product Management.

How You Will Make a Difference

What you will do:

  • Develop materials that support Timberland seasonal projects and provide solutions to overall materials strategies
  • Present Corporate Seasonal Materials to Product Design and Development
  • Work with key material vendors focusing on textiles, synthetics, hardware, laces, and non-wovens
  • Provide strategic and technical support to Product teams on seasonal materials initiatives that meet trend objectives, improve performance, reduce cost, and meet environmental goals
  • Identify and support the development of new materials and the optimization of manufacturing processes to help the Product team reach and exceed their performance, environmental, and cost targets
  • Provide technical analysis of material opportunities so that product-related decisions can be better informed to meet corporate material strategies
  • Travel to production sites 1-2 times per year to identify needed materials and ensure materials\xe2\x80\x99 proper use and processing
  • Interface with testing facilities to ensure materials pass Timberland standards
  • Work with design/ development teams to ensure material is used appropriately in the final product
  • Identify ways of reducing complexity in materials sourcing and development
  • Work to reduce material complexity by tracking and being aware of material usage trends to meet overall complexity targets
  • Manage Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Materials Database for assigned material categories
How you will do it:
  • Participate in product-related meetings, including Creative Direction and Seasonal Material hand-off meetings and tear-down meetings
  • Manage seasonal development of non-leather materials for seasonal projects
  • Maintain and continue to develop competitive intelligence and market awareness
  • Attend and participate in Timberland University (TBLU) and required Stratham professional development classes as scheduled
  • Demonstrate desire, motivation, and a passion for increasing the depth of knowledge and becoming an asset to the team

Skills for Success

Years of Related Professional Experience: 3-5 years of material development experience

Educational Position Requirements:

Formal education and subsequent undergraduate/graduate degrees, such as a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree, preferably in Fashion Merchandising, Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field, are nice, but we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • What we expect you already know/have:
  • Knowledge of textile development and materials sourcing
  • Knowledge of compound development
  • Knowledge of Flex PLM or other material data management systems
  • Knowledge of current footwear manufacturing processes
  • The ability to travel to overseas material supplier facilities 1-2 times per year
  • The capacity to work in a fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams while handling multiple tasks
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work in a cross-functional capacity
  • Flexible and open to change
  • Capability to work independently
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to increase footwear development knowledge
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Recognition of process cause and effect
  • Quantitative computer skills
  • Product line management experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organize information and effectively communicate with our multi-lingual teams
