Communications Assistant

CLASSIFICATION: Student Employee

REPORTS TO: Director of Communications

SUMMARY:

This position acts as a general assistant to the department, performing some clerical office functions as well as assisting the department with public relations, communications and marketing projects. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the university\'s mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with writing various communications including feature articles, emails, internal communications, articles for WordPress news site, social media content, communication plans, and other PR-related materials.
  • Interview students, staff, faculty and alumni, as necessary, to obtain information for potential stories to share across university platforms
  • Assist with special events and with coordinating photography and video needs.
  • Generate reports, memorandums, correspondence, presentation materials, spreadsheets, graphics, and other materials using various software programs, especially Microsoft Office.
  • Handle documents and maintain appropriate confidentiality
  • Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding expectations
  • Demonstrate and promote university values
  • Understand and abide by all regulations and policies, including NCAA, GLIAC, and national affiliations associated with athletics or other role-specific regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be an excellent writer. Experience with social media, writing, photo and video editing software is preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 3 credit hours as a graduate student while meeting the standards of academic progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems (PC and Apple), emphasis on Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), WordPress and Drupal.
  • Knowledge of basic HTML is a plus.
  • Understand and use social media in a professional manner (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the university.
  • Business office environment. Prolonged sitting and standing. Use of computer and telephone (eye and hand strain).
  • Some travel between locations may be required (own transportation). Occasional lifting up to 35 pounds.
