These two part time opportunities will average 20 - 25 hours per week. The schedule for this role is flexible and can vary week to week. Generally hours can be scheduled 7 days a week, 8 AM - 6 PM. SUMMARY The Animal Welfare Research Assistant helps conduct scientific research primarily focused on evaluating and
enhancing the welfare of Woodland Park Zoo\xe2\x80\x99s animal residents. This position will assist staff in developing
species-appropriate ethograms, collecting data via multiple methodologies, and presenting findings to staff,
volunteers, and the public. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in and understanding of animal
behavior/welfare science, research methods, data visualization, and/or statistical analysis. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with development and implementation of animal behavior and welfare research projects in
  • collaboration with Animal Care staff.
  • Analyze data and present findings to staff, volunteers, and external audiences under the direction of the Animal Welfare Scientist.
  • Assist staff with training and supervision of students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Work closely with Animal Care staff to meet research goals while adhering to all animal-related safety and
  • security protocols.
  • Assist with educational, community outreach, and public relations efforts as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate\xe2\x80\x99s degree or equivalent in biology, zoology, animal science, or related field and two (2) or more years\xe2\x80\x99 of animal-related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and
  • experience.
  • Strong analytical skills; basic knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods and
  • statistical analyses.
  • Knowledge of natural history, biology, and behavior of (non-domestic) zoo animals; experience conducting literature reviews, developing and using ethograms, and non-invasive data collection methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a range of stakeholders, primarily non-scientists; ability to adapt communication style based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with little supervision.
  • Strong desire and ability to learn new skills and adapt current knowledge, data collection techniques, and technologies to unique zoo applications.
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to work on multiple projects within the course of a day.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to work within diverse teams and environments, while treating everyone with respect
  • Ability to work varying hours and a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • College level courses in biology, psychology, wildlife conservation, and/or statistics.
  • Experience with research, data management, analysis, and/or visualization.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • This position may be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor
weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position does not include
direct contact or interaction with animals beyond observation. There is opportunity for some remote/hybrid work
at supervisor\xe2\x80\x99s discretion once fully trained. Pay: $19- $27 per hour Employment Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A criminal background check and pre-employment tuberculosis test ?will be required of the selected applicant. This role is not remote. Successful applicants must live and work in Washington State to perform this role.
