Job Description


Assists in public recreational activities by planning and conducting instruction within recreation specialties such as the performing arts, creative arts or sports; and/or assists in the planning and implementation of city-wide specialty or other comparable programs; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division. Vacancy is located at the Koko Head Shooting Complex. General work schedule is Wednesday-Sunday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position assists the Range Master in planning and conducting instruction in recreational activities at the Shooting Range, such as trap, skeet, pistol, rifle shooting, and archery; assists the Range Master with supervising the safe and effective operation of the Shooting Range; assists with advising and instructing shooters in the proper use and handling of firearms and correcting mechanical failures of firearms; and performs other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions:
Will work weekends, holidays, and evenings as required. Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies. Must be qualified to possess, carry, and/or have access to firearms and ammunition in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two (2) years of experience in the recreation specialty of firearms, which involved providing advice and/or instruction in firearms safety practices and the proper use and handling of a variety of firearms.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, and techniques relating to the use, care, maintenance, and function of a variety of firearms and related equipment; and knowledge of laws and standard practices relating to the use, safety, security, and maintenance of firearms.

Non-Qualifying Experience: General recreation experience, or recreation experience in an unrelated specialty area (e.g., arts, music, swimming, etc.), is not qualifying for the Recreation Assistant II (Firearms) position.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Prior to appointment:

1. Valid appropriate driver\'s license (automobile).

2. Obtain and maintain a Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test from the City\'s Health Services.
Prior to completion of probation: * National Rifle Association Firearm Instructor Certification;

  • American Red Cross First Aid Certificate, or equivalent; and
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED Certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent.
These licenses and certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.

FIREARMS REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must meet current State and Federal requirements applicable to obtain, possess, and use firearms and ammunition. Under the requirements of the Lautenberg Amendment to the Federal Gun Control Act, applicants for this position may not possess a conviction of domestic violence. This law applies regardless of when the conviction occurred.
