Job Description


Organizes and directs a city-wide program in a recreational specialty; conducts in-service training classes in the specialized activity; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division. The current vacancy is responsible for independently performing professional work in planning, organizing, and directing the daily operations of the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. This position is located at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. General work schedule is Sunday-Thursday, 7:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. May be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays. May serve as a Civil Defense Emergency worker.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with specialization in recreation, physical education, group work, or a related field.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Verification Requirement: You must submit evidence of your Bachelor\'s degree in order to be given credit. Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor\'s degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor\'s degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two (2) years of recreation experience, one of which shall have been in planning, organizing, and directing ocean education programs and/or activities.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of policies, principles, plans, tools, and techniques of recreation; instructional methods, plans, procedures, and techniques; group behavior; principles and practices of supervision; in-service training methods; and policies, principles, plans, tools, and techniques of ocean recreation; and the ability to plan, organize, promote, administer, and evaluate recreational activities and programs; adapt recreational policies, procedures, plans, methods, tools and techniques to the specific operational situation encountered; lead, direct, conduct and instruct participants in a recreational specialty; develop confidence and enthusiasm in participants and staff members and encourage them in group program participation; stimulate interest and obtain the support of the community in the recreation program; prepare reports; maintain good working relationship with the staff and the public.

Substitution: A Master\'s degree in recreation, physical education, or education from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one year of the general recreation experience requirement. There is no substitution for the required one (1) year of experience in the specialty area of planning, organizing, and directing ocean education programs and/or activities.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Prior to appointment: 1) Valid driver\'s license (Type 3/automobile).

Prior to completion of probation, possession of a valid:
1) American Red Cross First Aid Certificate, or equivalent; and
2) American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED
Certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent.

The above licenses and certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION:
