SALARY RANGE:

Current: $30.80 - $41.27 hourly

July 2024: $31.72 - $42.51 hourly

There is currently one (1) part-time (30 hours per week) vacancy in the Police Department.

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of technical duties involved in receiving, recording, storing, maintaining, releasing, and properly disposing of property and evidence collected by Police Department personnel; and to perform general technical duties in support of the Police Department. May exercise technical and functional supervision over Police Aides and volunteer staff.

Essential Functions

These functions may not be present in all positions in this class. When a position is to be filled, the essential functions will be noted in the announcement of position availability. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

Receive, record, store, and maintain property and evidence for the Police Department including monies, firearms, and narcotics.

Release or dispose of property and evidence upon authorization and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations.

Contact the Department of Justice regarding the release of weapons to owners.

Prepare authorized items for sale in auctions.

Retrieve and return property items to various businesses.

Deliver evidence to court.

May pick up and transport property and evidence from outside agencies.

May respond to crime scenes and transport collected property and evidence to the Police Department.

Respond to inquiries and requests from Department personnel, law enforcement agencies, and the public.

Input various detailed records into a computer terminal.

Maintain accurate and detailed data, verify accuracy of information, and update information; prepare reports.

Order and maintain Police Department supplies including badges, forms, and office supplies.

Participate in facilitating the care and service of Department vehicles.

Participate in the supervision of Police Aides and volunteer staff.

Stay abreast of new policies and laws pertaining to property and evidence.

Perform related duties as required.

Qualification Guidelines

A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this classification is as follows:

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation or its equivalent.

Specialized training in property and evidence management and handling is highly desirable.

Two years of responsible office experience preferably performing property management in law enforcement.

An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform essential functions may also be considered.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of, or ability to obtain: a Telecommunications Certificate issued by the Department of Justice.

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver\'s License. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment.

REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:

Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the assigned area of work.

Knowledge of principles and practices used in dealing with the public.

Knowledge of modern office practices, methods and computer equipment.

Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping.

Knowledge of principles of basic report preparation.

Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.

Skill in operating modern office equipment, including computer equipment.

Skill in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Access.

Skill in operating a motor vehicle safely.

REQUISITE ABILITIES:

Ability to learn principles, practices, methods, and techniques of maintaining and processing evidence and property.

Ability to learn, interpret, and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.

Ability to receive, record, store, and maintain property and evidence.

Ability to perform general clerical work.

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.

Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

Ability to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Ability to multi-task and complete a daily activity log.

PUBLIC EMPLOYEE DISASTER SERVICE WORKER:

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100 - all City of Costa Mesa employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
