POLICE EQUIPMENT/SUPPLY TECHNICIAN


The City of Elk Grove is seeking a Supply Technician for the Police Department. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, people-oriented individual who can multi-task, set priorities, and provide excellent customer service to all.

Representative Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

DESCRIPTION:
The technician will perform different clerical duties involved in procuring, receiving, issuing, and maintaining an accurate inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials for the Police Department. This includes equipment issued to officers, officer supplies and department forms. The Supply Technician also maintains a variety of records and files related to area of assignment.

1. Verifies and inspects incoming shipments for appropriate quantity and quality and ensures that staff receive items needed in an efficient and expedient manner.
2. Participates in researching, locating, and ordering supplies and equipment; obtains information relating to new products, service availability, prices, and delivery procedures.
3. Obtains and fills staff request; delivers equipment, supplies, and materials as appropriate; answers questions regarding product information, handling and disposal, and ordering procedures.
4. Maintains vendor files and records of supply transactions; prepares various reports relating to equipment issued, receipts, purchase orders, and billing information.
5. Participates in overseeing the inventory database for assigned area; maintains database on items issued to officers.
6. Conducts a periodic inventory of stock items; maintains proper stock levels; arranges for disposal of department equipment in accordance with City and department procedures.
7. Maintains appropriate procedures concerning the redistribution, consumption, and disposal of obsolete items.
8. Maintains storage locations in a clean and orderly manner.
9. Inspects and delivers orders to City staff; reviews shipping documents for proper delivery of good and services as necessary.
10. Performs or assists staff in determining appropriate sources of supply; identifies possible vendors; obtains information bids to determine vendor from whom purchases will be made; obtains samples from vendors for inspection.
11. Communicates with vendors and staff to resolve order, shipping, and invoice issues; returns products as necessary; secures order and invoice adjustments.
12. Performs a variety of clerical activities including preparing purchase requisitions and correspondence and reports; assists with the creation and modification of department forms; mails department packages.
13. Answers the phone and routes calls appropriately.
14. Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Basic principles and practices of storekeeping and inventory control.
  • Inventory procedures including the appropriate forms for ordering purposes.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.
  • Basic clerical accounting principles and practices.
  • Basic mathematical principles.



Ability to:
  • Organize, stock, issue, and deliver supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Conduct periodic inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Participate in researching, identifying, developing, and recommending methods of purchasing, stocking, reordering, and delivering supplies, equipment, and materials with the objectives of operational cost reduction and service and efficiency improvements.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Perform simple arithmetic computations.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Education and Experience Guidelines
- Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.


Experience:
  • Two (2) years general clerical experience.
  • Some warehousing or inventory control and purchasing experience is highly desirable.

License or Certificate:
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
