Job Description


The Neighborhood Developers (TND) is hiring a full time, hybrid Organizing/Community Building Director to lead its community building team. TND is a non-profit community development organization with a mission to create strong neighborhoods enabling community members to secure a stable home, achieve economic mobility, and determine their own future. We build affordable homes, support households to achieve greater financial mobility, and, through our Community Building program, organize community leaders on issues related to neighborhood conditions as well as social and housing justice. TND\xe2\x80\x99s headquarters is in Chelsea, where it has operated since 1978. The organization was invited into Revere in 2010, and since 2018, we are also offering some of our services in Everett. Our Community Building team creates opportunities that build person-to-person and people-to-place relationships, focuses on developing the skill and will of residents to take on leadership roles at TND and in our communities, and encourages civic engagement and activism to promote approaches and policies that stop displacement and preserve economic, social, ethnic, and racial diversity. In this position, you will have the opportunity to lead a team that works with community members in Chelsea, Revere, and Everett to support a network of involved and empowered members of our community, to help them shift power, and to make a difference all on a flexible work schedule that requires some evening and weekend work. Duties and Responsibilities

Program Development and Administration

  • Develop, manage, and implement TND\xe2\x80\x99s community building programs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Building team to set annual goals that advance TND\xe2\x80\x99s strategic plan.
  • Manage a strong team of passionate organizers, service members, fellows, interns, and volunteers and support their professional development.
  • Staff Community Building board subcommittee.
  • Help develop and monitor annual program budgets and manage program expenses.
  • Provide written updates about the team\xe2\x80\x99s accomplishments to the board.
  • Support grant application and reporting in partnership with the Resource Development team.
  • Evaluate success of the program in partnership with the Data & Learning team.
  • Develop new programs or outreach efforts, as needed.
  • Represent TND at municipal and partnership meetings and continue to build productive relationships with partners, stakeholders, and coalitions.
  • Identify internal opportunities for collaboration to continue to embed organizing in all of TND\xe2\x80\x99s programs.
Community Building Programs
  • Build relationships with community members through 1:1 meetings.
  • Recruit residents to the local resident groups and for leading events, such as the annual Bosson Park Block Party and Shirley Ave Cultural Festival.
  • Facilitate and support the activities and events of local resident groups.
  • Help create, plan, and implement leadership development programs, such as the TND\xe2\x80\x99s Board Leadership Boot Camp.
  • Support leaders in the development and implementation of campaigns related to TND\xe2\x80\x99s mission.
  • Build a culture of resident leadership, civic engagement, and collective action.
  • Identify emerging needs, issues, and trends among residents related to health equity, housing, economic, and social justice.
  • Collaborate with other community organizations in our community and connect residents to opportunities for action.
  • Help implement TND Community Building events.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • A commitment to TND\xe2\x80\x99s mission.
  • Community organizing, outreach, or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience or familiarity with one or more of the following: (1) housing justice, (2) anti-displacement strategies, (3) affordable housing development, (4) placekeeping, (5) community planning, (6) project management, (7) equitable neighborhood planning, and (8) public space design and construction.
  • College graduate or equivalent experience.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish (both written and spoken).
  • Case management or program management experience.
  • Team management and supervision experience.
  • Experience building trusting relationships across race, ethnicity, class, and generation.
  • Understanding of and/or experience working with government systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, committed to the larger whole.
  • Responsible, self-motivated, and able to carry out and prioritize multiple ongoing projects.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for meeting, motivating, and involving people in community activities and developing collaborative community and municipal partnerships.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and facilitation skills, warm and engaging presence.
  • Skillful organizer with demonstrated initiative for problem-solving.
  • Strong computer skills (we regularly use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Canva, DropBox, Salesforce, and Zoom).
