This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.

DEPARTMENT: Development Services
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
LOCATION: 4700 Elmore Road

Example of Duties

The Director for the Development Services Department is responsible for planning, directing and administering all short and long range operations for the Department. The Director is responsible for directing the Building Safety Division with its inspection, plan review, Permit Management, On-Site Water and Wastewater, Code Abatement, and Private Development sections. The Director is also responsible for directing the Land Use Permitting and Enforcement Section, which includes Land Use Enforcement, Right of Way Enforcement and Addressing. This position serves as the Municipal Building Official overseeing building permitting processes, construction inspection services, and municipal enforcement of land use and building codes. The Director ensures staff works safely and efficiently and manages responses to emergency situations that may arise. The Director meets and interacts regularly with contractors, developers, property owners, the general public and coordinates the activities of the Development Services Department with other federal, state and municipal agencies. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and twelve (12) years of professional experience in vertical or horizontal construction, economic development, public planning, and/or a related field.

OR

Associate\'s degree in Engineering, Planning, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related discipline and ten (10) years of professional experience in vertical or horizontal construction, economic development, public planning, and/or a related field.

OR

Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering, Planning, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related discipline and eight (8) years of professional experience in vertical or horizontal construction, economic development, public planning, and/or a related field.

OR

Master\'s degree in Engineering, Planning, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related discipline and six (6) years of professional experience in vertical or horizontal construction, economic development, public planning, and/or a related field.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver\'s license at time of hire.

Preferences:

  • State of Alaska registration as a Professional Engineer within six (6) months of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual\'s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
