Here\'s what you need to know:

The Oral Transliterator Aide will provide support to an administrator in a school setting through the end of the contract year (June 2023) and is subject to the annual contract renewal process thereafter. This position, also known as an Oral Interpreter, plays a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired and those who are not. The position of the Oral Interpreter at KIPP New Jersey specifically involves providing transliteration services to instructional leaders in an educational setting where they work closely to meet the needs of students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

The Oral Interpreter ensures that spoken communication within the school community is accessible and comprehensible for both deaf or hearing-impaired individuals and those who are not. This role demands proficiency in manual and oral communication methods and the ability to adapt to individual communication preferences.

Here\'s what you\'ll be doing:

FACILITATION and COMMUNICATION

  • Interpret or transliterate accurately and effectively between deaf or hearing impaired individuals and their hearing counterparts by presenting spoken messages utilizing easily read, clear mouth movements, and oral repeat of the spoken message ensuring that communication is clear and comprehensible.
  • Utilize sufficient sign vocabulary to provide proper interpretation of various instructional content and adapt as necessary to match the context.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with deaf or hearing impaired individuals and other members of the school community, fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
  • Collaborate with deaf or hearing impaired individuals to progress monitor and adapt or modify communication methods as needed. Discuss concerns with additional instructional and operations based staff when appropriate.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all information exchanged during interpreting situations.
  • Communicate effectively through signing, oral communication, and in writing, ensuring that the message is accurately conveyed.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of interpreting/transliterating assignments, including notes on individual preferences and needs.
  • Meet schedules and timelines for interpreting/transliterating assignments, ensuring punctuality and reliability.

OPERATIONS
  • Perform routine clerical duties; operate classroom and office equipment including computers, auditory systems, copy machines, and other equipment.
TEAM and FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
  • Provide oral transliteration services in pairing meetings with Instructional leaders to continuously improve upon student results and foster teamwork
  • Participate in school, departmental and parent meetings as required.
SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Proficiency in manual and oral methods of communication for the deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Ability to adapt communication methods to individual preferences.
  • Strong sign vocabulary relevant to academic or vocational subjects.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for building relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community.
  • Excellent communication skills in transliteration methods, oral communication, and writing.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Respect for confidentiality and privacy.
  • Punctuality and adherence to schedules.
  • Using pertinent software applications.
  • Operating standard office equipment.
Qualifications

Physical Requirements:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job\'s functions require the following physical demands:
  • Often required to stand and sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, or squat.
  • Some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling and significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Walk frequently and climb stairs.

Must Haves:

Education
  • Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, those with performance route certification will also be considered
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification or Completion of an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent is required.
Experience
  • Minimum of 1 or more years interpreting experience with deaf and hard of hearing population, preferably in an educational setting or;
  • Any combination of formal training and relevant documented interpreting experience that demonstrates assurance of the skills appropriate to meet the essential functions of the role as described.
