The Optical Manager oversees the daily operations of the optical department within an optometry practice. This role combines leadership, sales, customer service, and technical optical expertise to ensure patients receive high-quality eyewear and an exceptional experience. The Optical Manager supervises opticians, manages inventory and vendor relationships, ensures compliance with practice and industry standards, and supports the financial goals of the optical department.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
Supervise, train, and motivate optical staff to deliver excellent patient care and achieve sales goals.
Schedule and coordinate daily workflow in the optical area to ensure smooth patient transitions from exams to eyewear selection.
Maintain compliance with company policies, HIPAA, and relevant optical/vision care regulations.
Develop and implement operational procedures to improve efficiency and patient satisfaction.
Patient Service & Sales
Provide professional eyewear consultation, helping patients choose frames and lenses that meet their visual, aesthetic, and lifestyle needs.
Ensure accurate fitting, adjustments, and repairs of eyewear.
Drive optical sales through effective merchandising, promotions, and patient education.
Handle escalated patient concerns and ensure issues are resolved promptly and courteously.
Inventory & Vendor Management
Manage inventory levels of frames, lenses, and accessories.
Maintain relationships with optical vendors and negotiate pricing and promotions.
Monitor product performance and recommend adjustments to inventory mix based on patient demand and profitability.
Administrative & Financial
Track optical sales metrics, prepare performance reports, and assist with budgeting and forecasting.
Process orders, insurance claims, and payments accurately and efficiently.
Collaborate with the optometry team to align optical services with clinical care goals.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
ABO (American Board of Opticianry) certification preferred
Minimum 3-5 years of optical/optometry experience, including supervisory or management experience.
Strong knowledge of optical products, lens technologies, and insurance billing.
Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills.
Proficient in optical management software.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods.
Manual dexterity for fitting and adjusting eyewear.
Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs (e.g., boxes of frames, equipment).
