Position Title: Media Analyst (bilingual English/Spanish) About the Company Ad Fontes Media is a public benefit corporation that helps people and companies navigate the complex media landscape. We produce the famous Media Bias Chart(R) and serve our rating intelligence about news and \xe2\x80\x9cnews-like information\xe2\x80\x9d sources to advertisers, educators, publishers, and other stakeholders in the news media ecosystem. Our products and services protect advertiser reputation, create media accountability, and educate news consumers. Ultimately, they make a real difference to improve information quality and combat polarization throughout our society. We are helping bridge societal divisions caused by misinformation and extreme polarization, and we believe these are among the most important challenges of our time. This is a rare company where everyone who works there does so because they care about the company\xe2\x80\x99s mission. Company is headquartered in the Denver/Boulder, CO area. : As an Media Analyst, you will perform content analysis of news & information articles, video episodes, and podcasts episodes from sources across the media landscape. The work is performed in 3-hour shifts, virtually on Zoom. We rate each article or show in balanced pods of three analysts at a time\xe2\x80\x93one left-, one center-, and one right-leaning, politically. This means you will be working with two other people at a time who have different political viewpoints than you to rate news content together. We analyze content in this manner to mitigate our own biases and catch our own blindspots. We currently have nearly 60 analysts on our roster, who are balanced across political leanings and diverse across age, race, gender, and other personal characteristics. Diversity of perspective is critical to our mission. Our pods rotate so you will work with different people in various shifts. To assess political leaning, applicants are required to complete a self-classification survey on personally held political perspectives.

We are expanding into rating Spanish-language media sources, which is why we are currently seeking bilingual Spanish/English speakers.

The work is part-time and fully remote. We are looking for analysts who can commit at least 9 hours per week, but more hours are available. As part of our application, we also ask for a schedule availability survey and skills self-assessment. All of our Media Analysts complete a training period that includes a thorough immersion in our methodology, as well as practice rating articles and other news content. We purposefully assign each analyst a breadth of coverage over as many sources as possible to enhance each analyst\xe2\x80\x99s familiarity with sources across the spectrum. Once trained, analysts generally score articles similarly to each other regardless of their political lean; however, when significant differences occur, the group engages in a conversation during which analysts present their rationale for their respective scores. Therefore, analysts must be comfortable and able to respectfully engage in discussions about political issues and support their arguments based on text and citations from the content. Our process minimizes the impact of analyst bias on reliability and source bias scoring. It results in a rating of sources that many individuals, instructors, and other stakeholders find helpful in navigating today\xe2\x80\x99s news ecosystem. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Fluent in Spanish and English
  • Bachelor\'s Degree
  • Has a passionate interest in news media, contemporary US politics, and the work and mission of Ad Fontes Media
  • Excellent reading comprehension skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to engage in sometimes difficult conversations, including on sensitive issues
  • Ability to see issues from multiple perspectives while also respectfully expressing a dissenting perspective when applicable
  • Lives in the United States, and is politically/civically engaged
  • Has a personal computer and reliable internet, and is able to troubleshoot basic technical issues
  • Is familiar with a range of news sources
  • Is familiar with party platforms and government systems in the US
  • Is willing to divulge political leanings internally as required by our approach to analysis
Strong Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree, or a highly relevant undergraduate degree, in Media, Journalism, Political Science, Linguistics, History, Sociology, Philosophy, or other fields requiring strong skills in analyzing information content.
  • Professional experience in journalism, writing, teaching, library/information sciences, law, research, or analytics
