Level: Entry level to intermediate, full-time, non-exempt, based in Durham, North Carolina.

Starting Salary: $40,000-$43,000, based on experience.

Organization Overview

Founded in 2011 and based in Durham, North Carolina, Book Harvest (www.bookharvest.org) is a nonprofit organization that provides books to children and engages families and communities in promoting children\'s literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Book Harvest believes that books are essential to children\'s healthy development and well-being, that all children deserve to grow up in book-rich homes, and that all parents deserve access to the literacy resources and information that will enable them to be their children\'s first and best teachers and brain builders.

Position Overview

Book Harvest is growing! The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator is a new position on our team. Key responsibilities include assisting with the creation and dispersion of marketing content such as blog posts, social media copy, and program materials; organizing Book Harvest\'s attendance at community events that align with Book Harvest\'s mission and expansion initiatives; attending and participating in events outside of Durham County; maintaining a record of publicity pertaining to Book Harvest; and being an active member of the Book Harvest External Relations Department.

This position is an ideal fit for an individual with marketing and writing skills who loves to build relationships, create content, and engage with community members.

The position requires a close and collaborative working relationship with other organizations and families. For forging new relationships with educational institutions, the Marketing and Outreach Coordinator is capable of developing trust with a wide variety of stakeholders. They are a friendly and detail-oriented self-starter with an enthusiasm for learning and for taking on increasing responsibilities over time. They bring to the position a strong grounding in and understanding of cultural competence and educational equity and access, and share the belief that every child can succeed. They consistently represent the culture and core values of Book Harvest to our volunteers, our partners, and our community.

This position is based out of Book Harvest\'s office at 2501 University Drive in Durham, NC, is a member of the External Relations department, and reports to the Events and Development Manager. Some work will be conducted off-site and out in the Durham community, with mileage reimbursements and/or a rental vehicle provided by the organization as policy indicates. The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator may supervise part-time/temporary staff, interns and volunteers as they grow into their role.

Responsibilities

The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator\'s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

Outreach, Book Harvest Inc. (35%)

  • Contribute innovative and well-researched ideas to outreach strategies and initiatives.
  • Co-coordinate and attend community events outside of Durham that align with the organization\'s mission and expansion initiatives, providing marketing materials and children\'s books for each event as fit.
  • Forge and sustain partnerships with organizations and families.
  • Represent Book Harvest\'s culture and core values consistently to volunteers, partners, and the community.
Marketing, Book Harvest Inc. (25%)
  • Under the strategic direction of the Director of External Relations, assist in creating and disseminating marketing content, including blog posts, social media copy, and program materials.
  • Maintain a record of publicity related to Book Harvest and regularly update the In the News page on Book Harvest\'s website.
  • Consolidate and keep a record of campaign deliverables (as needed), social media insights (monthly), and event data (as needed).
  • Maintain an inventory and directory of materials, making sure all resources are accurate and current.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining the Book Harvest quote bank, photos, YouTube channel, and website.
  • Continually research new marketing platforms, social media networks, and trends to inform recommendations to the External Relations Department.
Marketing, Book Harvest Durham Events (25%)
  • Under the strategic direction of the Events Manager, assist with the promotion of Book Harvest Durham events, publishing events on event platforms like Eventbrite, Facebook, and local public event calendars.
  • Maintain and update internal event calendars \xe2\x80\x93 both google calendar and physical wall calendar.
  • Assist with distribution of physical event flyers to local entities and create a directory of local organizations and businesses who interact regularly with families.
  • Write and publish occasional blog posts related to Book Harvest Durham events.
Administration (15%)
  • As part of a learning team, participate in regular Book Harvest staff meetings, one-on-one meetings with their supervisor, departmental meetings, and other internal and external meetings as needed;
  • Sustained contribution to organizational inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging efforts;
  • Professional development opportunities as provided and recommended annually.
The ideal candidate demonstrates:
  • U.S. work authorization;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Superb communication skills, including friendliness, the ability to community clearly about the success of previous initiatives, and the ability to build trust with a wide range of individuals from a diverse community;
  • Excellent writing skills, with an ability to communicate objectives and goals in clear, concise, and compelling language and comfort with one\'s work being edited, sometimes multiple times as proposals are refined;
  • Capability in Google Suite/Microsoft Office and a variety of social media platforms, with some formal marketing experience preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for representing organizations in public;
  • Project management experience and time-management skills for juggling numerous time-sensitive projects simultaneously. Being familiar with project management software, such as Notion, is also an asset;
  • Good computer skills for generating reports, viewing marketing metrics, extracting data and sharing this information with other team members in project updates;
  • Confident and self-motivated with initiative to learn; can proactively ask for help and anticipate problems;
  • Process- and operations-driven mindset, with utter dependability and a commitment to meeting and exceeding deadlines and honoring commitments;
  • Understanding of and dedication to the mission and culture of Book Harvest, which includes cultural competence, demonstrated commitment to social justice and youth literacy, and a commitment to active involvement in an anti-racist organizational culture;
  • Adherence to all staff policies and procedures;
  • A minimum of 5 years driving experience, a valid driver\'s license, and clean driving record;
  • Ability provide own transportation to fulfill job responsibilities;
  • Ability to transport full boxes of books (up to 50 lbs) and remain stationary for extended periods of time;
