Job Description


Overview:
The Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) invites applicants for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator (Coordinator III). We are looking for a creative and engaging science and engineering storyteller to join our Communications and Outreach team to assist faculty and UWRL administration in writing and developing reports and outreach/promotional materials and in program support. The successful candidate should have excellent writing, editing, and visual media development skills and be excited to contribute to the UWRL science communications team by translating the impact and relevance of UWRL research for multiple audiences. The position can be either 75% or full time and has the potential for a hybrid remote schedule once training is complete and as approved by supervisor.


The UWRL is a USU research facility, nestled just downstream from First Dam, next to the Logan River. Responsibilities:
1. Write, edit, design, and coordinate development of promotional, reporting, and outreach materials that communicate the impact and relevance of UWRL research to diverse audiences (50%)

  • Create content for reports, publications, news articles, etc. using clear, concise language appropriate to the intended audience.
  • Create communications that translate the excitement of UWRL research for multiple audiences.
  • Develop media content to increase visibility of UWRL research findings and their application, impact and relevance.
  • Use design principles and consistent branding to create effective communications/ outreach documents that maintain the UWRL\xe2\x80\x99s professional image in all products/ publications.
  • Edit and format journal articles according to the appropriate journal style guides for faculty and graduate students as needed.
  • Track, compile, edit various reports to help meet UWRL reporting requirements.
  • Assist faculty with proposal development (writing and editing) as needed.
  • Other projects as assigned.

2. Coordinate UWRL visual communications activities (25%)
  • Serve as UWRL photographer (lab and field) as needed to create content for outreach and reporting publications and other applications.
  • Archive photo resources to maintain organized and efficient access to photo repository.
  • Set up and monitor Hydraulics time-lapse video cameras as needed.
  • Create graphics for reports, outreach materials.
  • Create short videos that highlight research projects or personnel, lab facilities/capabilities, etc. for web, social media, and other applications and represent the UWRL and USU within established brand and quality standards.

3. Coordinate the UWRL social media presence/strategy (15%)
  • Lead UWRL social media presence consistent with established USU and UWRL guidelines and priorities

4. Coordinate outreach and other events as needed (10%)
  • Track registrations and preparation in support of workshops, conferences, seminars, or other events and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualification:
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in communications, technical communications, public relations, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with science communication
  • Experience with digital photography
  • Experience with video creation/post-production processes
  • Knowledge of USU brand mission and identity

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Strong document design and visual media skills
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
  • Ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to foster effective working relationships within a team environment
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques
  • Willingness to learn new skills as needed
