Brief Description

The Manager, Clinical Informatics Initiatives is a multifaceted role that interfaces with various stakeholders across the enterprise, members, industry and government agencies to support key informatics and digital pathology initiatives. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for supporting the informatics activities and programs of the Informatics Committee and Digital and Computational Pathology Committee as well as other CAP informatics related activities. In addition, this role will assist in supporting evolving AI initiatives. The person selected will ensure that informatics and digital pathology activities are aligned with the CAP\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds strategy and business goals and needs.

The successful candidate will partner with members and internal CAP colleagues, most notably with Laboratory Improvement Program staff, Advocacy staff, Education staff and IS staff. In addition, this position will work with external organizations, in particular standards development organizations and industry, to understand and identify opportunities that can influence and affect the design and interoperability of laboratory information systems, whole slide imaging systems, and related AI models and tools. This will also involve working with government agencies promoting interoperability standards and implementations. The successful candidate will possess laboratory and/or and technical experience, strong analytical capabilities, excellent interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills.

Specific Duties
  • Manages and supports the Informatics and Digital and Computational Pathology Committees and informatics-focused project teams.
  • Manage and supports committee CSA and education programs to ensure alignment with the CAP\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds strategy and business needs.
  • Leads in the development process of new PT related products that arise from the committees.
  • Develops partnerships with domain experts, including members, industry, and government agencies.
  • Engages with member domain experts in the implementation of a strategic agenda for standards specifications and adoption by relevant standards development organizations (SDO) (e.g., IHE, HL7, LOINC, SNOMED, DICOM). May serve as official liaison and/or as Primary Secretariat for designated organizations. Summarizes SDO activities and updates to the relevant committees and councils.
  • Staff point person to Laboratory Accreditation Program for checklist questions pertaining to informatics and digital pathology.
  • Manage and support relationships with the CAP\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds WSI partner, Digital Scope, to enhance capabilities and resolve issues pertaining to committee\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds programs that use Digital Scope. Periodic review of the capabilities of Digital Scope and recommends changes or upgrades to Director, Clinical Informatics Initiatives and CSA staff leadership.
  • Reviews the external digital image management systems environment to ensure the CAP\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds functional needs are adequately met by current CAP products.
  • Leadership role in the investigation of new image management systems that the CAP may need for its products.
  • Manages the development process for committees\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbd online resources guides and topic centers.
  • Develops partnerships with internal stakeholders including Education, Advocacy, Laboratory Improvement Programs areas, Communications and Marketing areas as well as others as needed.
  • Work with industry and government agencies for informatics and digital pathology related issues; often in collaboration with Advocacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of existing and emerging informatics and digital pathology technologies affecting pathologists. This includes technologies that could lead to AI models.
  • Works closely with the Senior Manager, AI and Data Standards Initiatives to identify and complement opportunities that intersect informatics and artificial intelligence CAP and committee projects.
  • Ability to manage project teams across the department to ensure members leads maintain agenda, minutes and timelines.
  • Recommends new ideas or strategies to management on approaches to optimize business success.

  • Experience and practical knowledge in clinical and/or anatomic pathology laboratory and/or information technology, especially as it applies to the laboratory and pathology.
  • Experience in working with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS); a super-user or technical knowledge is preferred.
  • Familiarity with at least one SDO is preferred.
  • Able to summarize complex issues in clear concise terms for consumption by non-technical professionals.
  • Able to network, create and sustain relationships with members, staff, industry vendors, government agencies, other professional organizations.
  • Must enjoy working both independently and in a team setting.
  • Enjoy learning with a curiosity and a desire to understand complex systems. Able to understand technical components of standards development organizations and government standards work.
  • Ability to foster strong collaborations among members, staff and industry.
  • Strong leadership capabilities to work with members to align strategically on business and policy issues.
  • Capacity to make appropriate business decisions in an evolving environment as well as demonstrate flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty.

  • Ability to work under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Interest in becoming a content expert in pathology and laboratory informatics and whole slide imaging.

Education/Experience

Education
  • Bachelor\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds or Master\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbds degree in Medical Technology, Cytotechnology, Information Technology, Bio-informatics, Clinical Informatics.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years\xc3\xaf\xc2\xbf\xc2\xbd experience in a clinical or anatomic laboratory and/or information technology.
  • Experience using laboratory information system preferred.
  • Experience with whole slide imaging systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of at least one standards development organizations work (e.g., HL7, SNOMED, LOINC, IHE, DICOM) desirable.
  • Experience in project management a plus.
Additional Criteria
  • Travel (approximately 15%) during the week and weekends, primarily for committee-related work and meetings.
