THE POSITION:

This position supports the Youth and Family Services Bureau (YFSB) in the Police Department to strengthen and enhance services provided to Hayward families to keep youth positively engaged in the community and out of the juvenile justice system. The Lead Program Assistant works with YSFB mental health counselors to provide case management, life skills training, restorative justice, gang prevention workshops, and other services.

The Lead Program Assistant is a Citywide classification; current vacancies exist in the Police Department however future citywide vacancies may be filled from this recruitment.

Essential Duties

What you will do:
  • Under direction, represent program to the public through public service announcements, classes, workshops, events and presentations
  • Under direction, develop and implement policies and procedures for implementing various, education, community and volunteer programs to assist youth
  • Work with supervisors to identify community needs and opportunities and design programs to fill those needs and achieve identified program outcomes.

Develop and maintain positive effective working relationships with community groups, organizations, co-workers, City departments, and the public.

Communicate effectively with a wide range of clients and agencies.

Work a flexible schedule; must be able to work weekends and evenings as required.

Prepare clear, concise written reports, letters, and memoranda.

Minimum Qualifications

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

You have:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two (2) years of experience equivalent to the Library Program Assistant or two (2) years progressively responsible experience in case management, education/tutoring program coordination, customer service, project management or similar field.

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor\'s degree in Humanities, Social Sciences, Counseling, Education or a closely related field.

License: Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver\'s License.

The examination process will result in a ranked eligible register of candidates for hiring consideration by the department derived from any of the exam processes mentioned above.

Department Interviews - Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process.

Candidates under final consideration for employment with the City should expect to undergo an employment background/reference check that may include, but is not limited to: employment history verification, medical evaluation, confirmation of educational credentials and degrees, licenses including driver\'s license, registrations, certificates, and other credentials as part of the appointment process. Some positions, depending on the nature of the work, also require a credit check and a review of Summary Criminal History obtained from the State Department of Justice through Live Scan Fingerprinting.
