This position is located in the Supply/Mail Room within the Public Health Laboratory

There are two (2) vacancies associated with this posting.

Responsible for processing requests for forms and supplies submitted by laboratory clients. Assemble laboratory specimen kits and supplies for delivery. Package required supplies to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the different couriers used by the laboratory. Operates US Postal machine, United Parcel Service (UPS) software and postage scale in accordance with SOP. Receives all shipments via freight, UPS, and courier systems on a daily basis. Check packing slips against purchase orders to determine correctness of shipment. Delivers supplies and/or equipment to requesting Sections or Divisions. Opens and separates mail and specimens by test requested. Specimens are sorted and distributed appropriately.

Responsible for ordering, delivering, maintaining, and inventorying gas cylinders for the Hayne Building. This includes processing specifications and requisitions to establish purchase order and coordinating with Lab Supervisor for delivery.

Cuts open animal head and removes brains (histological operation) for testing. Number brains and request forms according to Virology and Rabies Laboratory\'s procedures. Rabies vaccination will be provided at no cost by the Public Health Laboratory.

Responsible for mail and specimen pick up from the Northeast Post Office. Must properly sort mail and specimens. Delivers courier mail to another DHEC facility using cargo van.
Responsible for histological operation on a rotating schedule during assigned weekends and holidays. Must pick up mail and specimens from Post Office and properly sort and store them on assigned weekends and holidays. Serves as backup person in the event of an emergency.

Gathers and shreds documents, including confidential material, from assigned areas of the BOL. HIPAA and safety guidelines are strictly followed.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and journey-level technical experience in a related laboratory setting.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Agency Additional Requirements: Rabies immunity is required with a series of rabies vaccine immunization shots.

Biohazard dangers constant while processing specimens and safety procedures must be followed to prohibit employee from exposure to certain biological hazards.

Must be able to follow detailed written and oral instructions.

Must be able to maintain accurate laboratory records and prepare simple reports.

Must be able to operate state motor vehicle, postage machine, UPS machine, calculator, pallet jack, and hand truck.

Must possess a valid SC driver\'s license and be able to drive a cargo van.

Must be willing to work a rotating schedule on holidays and weekends; must be available on assigned weekends.

Must be able to distinguish colors.

Must be able to lift 50lbs. to a height of two feet off floor.

Must have the manual dexterity required to open and separate mail.
