The Opportunity
Join Washington State Ferries as a journey-level Marine Electrician, performing skilled electrical work on vessels and terminals in compliance with Federal, State, and USCG regulations. This role supports the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility through preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and diagnostics of complex electrical and control systems.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Journey Electrician will:

  • Troubleshoot and Repair Electrical Issues on Vessels and at Terminals
  • Vessel propulsion, steering, lighting, power distribution, alarming and monitoring, communications, surveillance, cathodic protection, and integrated battery systems
  • Use electronic diagnostic tools, and read drawings, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Ability to respond to equipment failures and vessel breakdowns 24/7.
  • Insulation resistance testing.
  • Inspection and maintenance of electrical motors.
  • Construction of new electrical systems.
  • Relay and PLC-based controls on vessels and terminals.
  • Diagnostics of PLC, PLC controlled systems, motors, motor controllers, advanced electronic equipment, and complex control systems.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Marine Electrical Training/Experience
  • Completion of a recognized marine electrician apprenticeship, journey-level certification, accredited vocational program, or at least four years of equivalent marine electrical experience.
  • AC/DC Systems Competence
  • Proven ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair AC and DC systems up to 4160VAC and 900VDC, including propulsion, steering, lighting, power distribution, alarming/monitoring, communications, surveillance, cathodic protection, and integrated battery systems.
  • Specialized Electrical Equipment Skills
  • Demonstrated skill in working with fiber optic systems (installation/maintenance), PLCs, software-controlled electronics, HMIs, AC motors and controls, AC generators, large DC motors, motor re-brushing, commutator repair, and testing of large motors/generators.
  • Technical Diagnostics & Tools
  • Proficiency with electrical/electronic diagnostic tools and insulation resistance testing; ability to accurately identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Blueprints & Technical Documents
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical drawings, schematics, blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals.
  • Electrical Theory & Troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of AC/DC electrical theory and practical background in electrical troubleshooting.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making
  • Ability to independently analyze problems, think strategically, and implement effective solutions within established policies.
  • Planning & Time Management
  • Competence in prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and adapting to both routine and emergent work situations.
  • Teamwork & Communication
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, adapt to changing priorities, and communicate technical information clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Physical Capability
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 35 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally (e.g., tools, motors, batteries).
  • Special Employment Requirements
  • Ability to pass a respiratory/medical questionnaire and annual respirator fit test
  • Maintain a valid Washington State Driver License.
  • Obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of hire.
  • Subject to DOT pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing.
  • May be required to pass a pre-employment diagnostic and troubleshooting test.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Generator Systems Expertise
  • Experience working with generators over 200kw and associated control equipment.
  • PLC Certifications
  • Formal certification or advanced training in Siemens, Allen Bradley, or ABB PLC systems.
  • Technical Drafting Software
  • Experience with AutoCAD or equivalent software for creating or modifying electrical system drawings.
  • Licensing for Terminal Work
  • Washington State EL01 Journey-Level Electrical License for terminal-based electrical work.
