Peace Officer Candidates ensure the security of the State Capitol Complex and Terrace Hill (Governor\'s Residence). This position requires a Candidate to: Conduct Building Checks, Operate Magnetometer Equipment, Lock/Unlock Buildings, and Dispatching of the Police Radio System at Terrace Hill. A Peace Officer Candidate will provide support to troopers and the overall mission of District 16. It is an expectation that anyone seeking the position of Peace Officer Candidate, is interested in becoming a certified State Peace Officer with the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

The Peace Officer Candidate Position is a (temporary) non-sworn Law Enforcement position within the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS). It is considered temporary, consequently, as Candidates are expected to apply separately for openings within the Iowa Department of Public Safety in the areas of: State Trooper, Special Agent, and/or Fire Marshall, when a hiring process becomes active. If hired as a Peace Officer Candidate, you are then afforded two opportunities of seeking employment as a Certified Peace Officer with the Iowa Department of Public Safety. If unsuccessful, after two attempts of being not accepted into the DPS Academy, you will be asked to resign your position of Peace Officer Candidate.

*Employment as a Peace Officer Candidate does not guarantee your entrance into the DPS Academy.

The DPS Academy hiring process will include the following:

  • Physical Fitness Testing (1.5 mile run, sit-ups, push-ups and sit and reach)
  • Oral Board (interview)
  • Written Test (grammar, spelling, mathematics, writing, etc.)
  • Completion of a Polygraph
  • Psychological and Medical Evaluations
  • Extensive Background Investigation
Upon successfully completing this process, you \'may\' be offered a conditional offer of employment with the DPS. All recruits will attend a 20 week academy, located at Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa.

The Academy is a highly structured, regimented, and stressful (paramilitary) environment. You will arrive at the Academy early Monday morning and be dismissed Friday afternoon, with all weekends off. During the Academy you will receive instruction in the areas of Law Enforcement to include, but not limited to: Accident Investigation, Firearms, Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, Physical Conditioning, Interview Techniques and Defensive Driving.
You shall maintain academic proficiency in all required areas. If standards are not met, you may be dismissed from the Academy. You may also be dismissed for failing to maintain physical standards, firearm qualifications, integrity violations, and/or any deficiencies which the Academy Staff deem to be unacceptable.

Upon graduation of the Academy, a 70 day Field Training Program (FTO) and completion of a 1 year probationary period is required.

Applicants must have ability to pass thorough back investigation conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
