Position Details

General Statement

The Office of Audit Services\' (OAS) mission is to provide assurance and advisory services that are independent, objective and risk-based in order to protect Montana State University and to improve its operations.

The Internal Auditor performs financial, operational and compliance audits, in conjunction with other auditors or independently, in accordance with internal auditing standards. This position also performs investigative and advisory services under the direction of a supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops or assists with the preparation of plans for financial, operational and compliance audits.
  • Conducts analyses, meets with university personnel and examines documents and records to execute plans and accurately interprets results against defined criteria.
  • Documents plans, procedures and results in work papers in a logical and consistent manner.
  • Applies internal control concepts in a wide variety of university settings and appropriately assesses the exposures resulting from ineffective or missing control practices.
  • Understands financial, operational and compliance risks that affect university activities.
  • Interprets and evaluates compliance with applicable federal, state and university laws, regulations and policies.
  • Communicates observations, recommendations and other results to management through written reports and orally.
  • Assists with investigative or advisory services as assigned.
  • Performs administrative and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Bachelor\'s degree or will obtain within six months, preferably accounting, finance, information systems, economics, or other similar business or technology, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting, auditing, information systems, bookkeeping, finance, business office, retail, clerical, or a similar business environment.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Holds professional certification (CIA, CPA, CFE, CISA or equivalent) or has met educational qualifications and is willing to obtain certification.

  • Possess an intermediate level planning and research skills.
  • Possess an intermediate level of knowledge of auditing concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Possess an intermediate level of knowledge of governance, risk management and control processes.
  • Possess effective technical writing, oral communication and diplomacy skills.
  • Be able to analyze records, systems and processes.
  • Be able to develop logical conclusions from information reviewed.
  • Be able to clearly document the nature, timing, extent, and results of audit procedures.
  • Be able to work successfully both independently and in teams.
  • Be able to work successfully with faculty, staff and students in a diplomatic manner.
  • Represent the office and MSU to others in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrated ability using computers for word processing, spreadsheet development and process mapping software applications.
Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

This position is located at MSU-Bozeman, however, some travel (including overnight) to other campuses and related entities, meetings, conferences, or other activities is required.

Must possess a valid driver\'s license (or be able to attain one within the first six months), an acceptable driving record and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. Please do not send a copy of the driver\'s license at this time. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver\'s license, a valid Montana driver\'s license must be obtained prior to travel.)
