Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides leadership and expertise for helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Guided by social justice principles, we cultivate a vibrant learning and working community for all members. The following units are within ODI: ADA Compliance, Bias Incident Support Services, Diversity Training & Education, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG.

The LGBTQ+ Equity Center engages and encourages the campus in building a fully equitable community, and provides programming that develops and empowers agents of social justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.

The graduate assistant, communications for the LGBTQ+ Equity Center will report directly to the program manager and will support the center as follows:
  • Serve as the Center\xe2\x80\x99s first point of contact for telephone calls and email queries, and a first point of contact for Center outreach;
  • Create weekly newsletters, and curate and manage social media;
  • Provide administrative support for the Center\xe2\x80\x99s operations \xe2\x80\x93 including program execution, communications, outreach, and maintenance of the lounge and library;
  • Maintain databases, calendars, and order food or reserve spaces; and
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.



  • Some weekend and evening hours may be required to support events.



Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
This position is only open to current Graduate Students. Must be a registered graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland, College Park and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.

Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members.
  • Experience using Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience creating flyers and other promotional materials.



Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Knowledge of gender pronouns and current issues that LGBTQ+ communities face.
  • Knowledge of how LGBTQ+ identities intersect with other marginalized identities such as, race, gender, class, and ability.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, editing, speaking/facilitating and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced user of GSuite.
  • Ability to work independently, a part of a team, as well as under direction.
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of stakeholders (internal and external).



Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Continuity for 2+ years in the position is desirable, but not required
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite

  • This is a 20-hour per week, 12-month graduate assistantship.
