Fairbanks, AK, United States

Job Description

What You Will Be Doing
The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) seeks an entry-level geoscientist to conduct field and office-based work, including gathering, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting surficial geologic data from Alaska\xe2\x80\x99s North Slope. As a part of the Division\xe2\x80\x99s Arctic Strategic Transportation and Resources (ASTAR) team, the successful applicant will work with DGGS staff, contractors, and other North Slope stakeholders to better understand the distribution and character of surface materials. Additionally, this position will support other aspects of the program, supporting the project\xe2\x80\x99s mission to identify, evaluate and advance the quality of life and economic opportunities in North Slope Borough Communities through infrastructure development. Therefore, we seek someone with a broad-based geologic background, a working knowledge of GIS, good organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task to support project activities and data dissemination.

We anticipate this position lasting ~18 months.

Mission and Culture
The DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). The newly formed Hydrology and Surficial Geology Section increases public safety and strengthens communities and infrastructure by providing information about the distribution and character of surface materials properties and the distribution of groundwater resources across all 400 million acres of Alaska. This information is vital for land-use planning efforts and provides essential information many Alaskans use.

Core Responsibilities
  • Gather, organize, compile, describe, and help evaluate geologic data, including existing and newly collected field and laboratory data.
  • Populate databases with geologic information about sand and gravel resources
  • Use GIS to create geologic maps and derivative or interpretive products supporting project goals.
  • Assist with field season planning and participate in helicopter-supported fieldwork to gather additional sand and gravel resource assessment data.
  • Work to create maps, figures, reports, and other datasets for publication and dissemination.

Benefits of Joining Our Team
DGGS offers ample opportunity to meet program goals through extensive collaboration with top technical and scientific practitioners. This work performed will be a part of ongoing collaborations between DGGS and several stakeholders across the State, including federal and local agencies, native organizations, contractors, individuals, and businesses in the private sector, and offers an excellent opportunity to build relationships. Staff is encouraged to learn and grow through work activities, from each other\xe2\x80\x99s experiences, and via structured training on equipment, ArcGIS, and other geospatial processing techniques. In addition, field data collections conducted at remote Alaska locations require the team to operate as a single unit under sometimes stressful situations, which encourages team bonding.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is at the DGGS main office in Fairbanks, Alaska. The daily work environment is open and collegial, allowing collaboration and coordination among the entire DGGS staff.

Who We Are Looking For
We seek a motivated entry-level geoscientist with a background in geology, physical geography, geological engineering, or closely related fields, with knowledge of surficial geologic material properties and working knowledge of GIS. Engineering geology, remote sensing, surficial geologic mapping, and database experience are preferred but not required. Experience conducting fieldwork in remote Alaskan settings is also desirable but not required for this position. We encourage you to apply if you meet the Minimum Qualifications for a Geologist 1 and have a background in these areas.
