GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Corrections Lusk Wyoming Women\'s Center is currently hiring a Senior Fish Culturist for the Aquaculture Building used to raise Tilapia. The incumbent will perform the duties of Aquaculture Shop Supervisor and direct inmate workers in the day-to-day operation of a reticulating aquaculture facility producing Tilapia. The position also requires supervision of other Correctional industry shops as dictated by staffing needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
  • Preventive maintenance on pumps and other production system components.
  • Tool and chemical inventories (ability to create and use spreadsheets in Excel).
  • Maintain inmate worker records and enter payroll and additional information into WCIS.
  • Train inmate workers on aquaculture-related topics and workplace health and safety.
  • Participates in operational planning, including budgeting, long-term goals, and educational programs.
  • Performs daily fish culture functions involving egg handling, fish rearing, and fish distribution.
  • Maintains hatchery buildings, grounds, roads, fences, and a wider variety of equipment, emphasizing water enhancement equipment.
  • Maintains other various records and completes reports as specified by the Department, State, and other federal agencies as needed; includes monthly reports, feed orders, effluent discharge permit reports, etc.
  • Advises on fish scheduling, egg requests, and truck schedule.
  • Monitors fish health and growth and determine feeding rates, flow rates, and rearing densities.
  • Calculates and administers chemical treatments as defined by Department policy and federal regulations.
  • Evaluates current methods and experiments with new fish culture techniques.
  • Solicit bids, submits purchase requisitions, make purchases, and submit invoices for payment.
  • Follows all fiscal procedures and accurately completes all necessary forms.
  • Plans directs and supervises the work of others.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions to stay current on fish culture techniques, computer technology, Department policy, and Department issues statewide.
  • Makes contacts with schools, local media, and the general public.
  • Gives tours of hatchery and broodstock facilities.


Qualifications


PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to applicants with a bachelor\'s degree in Fish or Wildlife Biology with three (3) - to five (5) years of progressive work experience (typically in Fish or Wildlife Biology).

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of broodstock management techniques, fish genetics, and scientific methods for analyzing and developing a long-range plan for captive broodstock.
  • Knowledge of fish health; monitoring for fish disease and application of therapeutics in compliance with Department and federal regulations.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:

Bachelor\'s Degree (typically in Fish or Wildlife Biology)
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Fish or Wildlife Biology) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Fish Culturist
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Fish or Wildlife Biology) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Fish Culturist

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Be available 24 hours a day on work rotation, including weekends.

  • Able to work in cold, wet conditions in and around water.

  • Able to lift fifty pounds.

  • Climbing on an occasional to regular basis.

  • Balancing on an occasional basis.

  • Stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching regularly.

  • Crawling on an occasional basis.

  • Reaching and Pushing/pulling regularly.

  • Seeing: the visual ability to operate machinery and perform mechanical or skilled trade duties.

  • Seeing: the visual ability to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

  • Environmental Conditions: WDOC prisons are typically modern, well-lit, air-conditioned, and ventilated. These positions typically work inside with occasional work outside. There is the risk of exposure to mechanical or atmospheric hazards periodically. Because this is a prison setting, staff must be able to work around incarcerated felons frequently and have the risk of being exposed to infectious diseases.

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • Due to the nature of the essential job duties, the candidate must live in Lusk
  • An offer of employment to the selected applicant will be conditional upon completing a physical exam and medical review with a properly licensed and credentialed medical professional.
  • Transcripts of any relevant coursework and/or degrees obtained from an accredited college or university will be required upon the interview date.

  • This position will require the selected applicant to complete a 5-week training course at WDOC\'s Training Academy in Rawlins, WY. Lodging accommodations and meals will be provided. A normal salary will be received while in training.
