Job Summary

The newly relaunched Union Square & Co., a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc., is an independent trade publisher that showcases top-tier talent and brands and gives space to unique perspectives and strong voices in adult and children\'s publishing. Our robust program includes books, stationery, calendars, and games, as well as the adult eponymous imprint, the children\'s imprints Union Square Kids and Boxer Books and Puzzlewright Press, which publishes pencil-and-paper puzzles, and Sterling Ethos, which publishes to magic and mystic-driven books and products.

We are seeking a Financial Analyst to support the Director, Financial & Strategic Planning on a day-to-day basis. This role will prepare the budget/forecast for our Publishing unit on a title-by-title basis; work closely with all departments to ensure tracking to budget; prepare financial reports and create new reports according to departmental needs.

An employee in this position can expect an annual starting rate between $75,000 and $85,000, depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.

What You Do

  • Prepare the Budget/Forecast on a title-by-title basis by Publishing unit for both frontlist and backlist
  • Work with the Director, Financial & Strategic Planning on the 5-year plan
  • Review acquisition P&L\'s and give feedback as needed to our editors
  • Prepare weekly sales recap
  • Responsible for sales reporting by sales channel including updating and maintaining data warehouse for customers by sales channel
  • Liaise with Editorial, Sales & Marketing as well as other departments to ensure tracking to budget and tracking title moves
  • Assist and implement new reports that are useful and meaningful for management to better understand the day-to-day business
  • Ad hoc analysis
Knowledge & Experience
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Publishing experience a strong plus
  • Strong Excel skills mandatory (Xlookups, sum-ifs, pivot tables, macros)
  • Must be familiar with PowerPoint
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has the ability to multi-task and prioritize day-to-day projects
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a wide variety of internal stakeholders
  • A proven record of meeting deadlines and budgets while maintaining the highest level of quality control
