Duties:


10Contributes to publishing and dissemination of information about Alaska non-marine arthropods through authorship of publications, through reviewing papers for journal editors, and through reviewing papers for authors before they submit manuscripts to journals. Requires expert knowledge in the field of study. Includes presentations at meetings when appropriate.Essential
10Grant and contract solicitation and administration. This requires the ability to work with the curator to help find grant opportunities, write persuasively and collaboratively, knowledge of funding agencies and requirements, creative thinking, and budget preparation and administration. This also involves keeping stock of and purchasing supplies when needed. Requires preparation of reports for granting agencies.Essential
10Loan Administration. Specimens are regularly loaned to other institutions worldwide. The process must be completely accountable, legally and institutionally. Requires ability to manage database files, prepare specimens for mailing, knowledge of the collection\xe2\x80\x99s loan policies and procedures, as well as federal and international regulations. Requires correspondence with loan recipients to assist and encourage safe return of overdue loans.Essential
10Public contact & Exhibit development. The collections manager hosts tours for public schools, tourists, university classes and individuals. Requires knowledge of the educational components of the collection and how they relate to school curricula or tour group knowledge base. Skills needed include public speaking, supervision, and the ability to inspire and educate the public. Collections work closely with the exhibits coordinator and preparator to develop and execute new exhibits as well as refreshing existing permanent exhibits. Requires intimate knowledge of the collection, ability to interpret complex intellectual ideas and convert into educational visual representation.Essential
10Specimen acquisition and preparation. The collections manager will prepare specimens to museum standards to reduce the collection\xe2\x80\x99s backlog of un-curated material. The collections manager will help collect new specimens during field work that further the mission of the Museum, and prepare them into the collection, (including preparation of DNA-quality samples). Requires physical fitness and field work experience.Essential
10Supervision of technicians and volunteers and management of collection usage. Many students who work or volunteer go on to work in the museum profession. The collections manager is expected to provide professional training to these students, preparing them for potential graduate degrees in museum-related fields. This requires knowledge of current professional standards, policies, and procedures. The collections manager will provide oversight of all those working in or with the collection, including visiting researchers.Essential
20Cataloging of specimens and management of specimen data. Involves entering data into a database and maintaining the quality of the data as well as the training and supervision of students and lab technicians performing these tasks. Requires knowledge of entomological relational database management including georeferencing best practices. Obtains, evaluates, and catalogs data on distribution of non-marine arthropods of Alaska from all available sources, such as direct contacts with people statewide by phone and email, unpublished reports, online data sources (eg iNaturalist), and published literature. Requires knowledge of the distribution of Alaskan non-marine arthropods and the networking skills to extract this knowledge from the wider community.Essential
20Specimen Identification. Authoritative identification of museum specimens involves taxonomic expertise and the ability to seek external expertise when needed. The Collections Manager will work to reduce the number of unidentified specimens in the collection and keep the database updated with new identifications. This may include preparation of DNA barcodes.Essential




Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of museum protocols, prior experience with similar collections, and advanced training in entomology (MS or PhD preferred). Expert knowledge of at least one large insect order is required with preference given to expertise in Diptera or Hymenoptera. Knowledge of grant writing processes and abilities. Preference will be given to applicants who have 2 or more years experience with Entomology collection specimen databases such as Arctos, Emu, Specify, Symbiota, etc. The successful applicant should be an energetic person who has the ability to work independently or as part of a team and who has excellent organizational skills and a detail-oriented approach to work. The candidate should have knowledge of museum practices and standards for collection care and digitization; excellent oral and written communication skills, and supervisory experience; computer skills; the ability to adapt rapidly to changes in technology; and the ability to interact in a positive and enthusiastic manner with others in the workplace. Experience in authorship of publications and reviewing papers for journal editors. Experience in public outreach & exhibit development.


Preferred Experience:

1-2 years experience in collections management or equivalent experience.


Required Education or Training:
A Master\'s degree in entomology, or equivalent experience, is required.



Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, term, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
