Position Summary

The Engineer I (EI) participates in individual field projects to assist with the installation and maintenance of geophysical instruments and works towards basic proficiency with these technologies. Under direct supervision, the incumbent will work both independently and in group settings to plan and assist with conducting field operations at sites throughout the United States, polar latitudes, and other international locations. The EI will also assist with equipment testing, troubleshooting, and evaluating new technologies. The EI contributes to reporting and project documentation to ensure that all work conforms to high technical and organizational standards.

Engineers are ambassadors who represent the organization\xe2\x80\x99s values to scientists, landowners, sponsors, and other community members. The EI position will report to the Engineering Manager or a higher-level engineer within designated project areas.

The successful NOTA/EAR GI Support EI-T2 candidate will participate in and help manage multiple individual field projects to assist with the installation and maintenance of geophysical instruments. Under direct supervision, the incumbent will work both independently and in a group setting to plan and conduct field operations at sites throughout the United States, polar latitudes, and other international locations will provide support for field and warehouse operations, including inventory management, configuration, testing, and shipping of the following: cellular and satellite-based data communications equipment, GNSS receivers and antennas, surface electronic components of NOTA BSM stations, expendable materials (e.g., batteries and solar panels), and other miscellaneous items that are used to support NOTA GNSS and BSM station maintenance. In addition, the successful NOTA/EAR GI Support EI-T1 candidate will also manage GAGE Facility portable GNSS campaign kits and geodetic imaging instruments and supporting materials. Specific duties for NOTA Southwest O&M will be directed by the Southwest Regional NOTA manager and/or NOTA GNSS/BSM Operations Manager.

Details of Responsibilities

General Essential Job Duties:

? Under direct supervision, assists with geophysical field projects, which may include coordinating travel logistics, site reconnaissance, site selection, permitting, installation activities, maintenance, network configuration, instrument operation, station communications and/or data flow activities through the application of high precision geodetic technologies.

? Under direct supervision, assists with identifying and troubleshooting technical issues related to geophysical instrument hardware, firmware, software, and data communications.

? Prepare equipment and tools for field deployment, which includes testing systems. Work is overseen by the Engineering Manager and guided by other technical experts.

? Maintain tools and vehicles used for field deployment.

? Assist with warehouse organization for field work preparation.

? Draft appropriate documentation of field activities and metadata using established tools, protocols, and databases as maintained by the organization.

Position Description

? Develop and maintain good relationships with community members, suppliers, landowners, and business partners within areas of expertise and project assignments.

? Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of the business.

Specialized Essential Job Duties:

? Submit expenditures in accordance with policy and provide documentation in support of expenses. All purchases are made with the direct oversight of the Engineering Manager.

? May contribute to scientific and engineering presentations on geophysical project results.

? May prepare content for the website for review prior to publication.

Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities:

? This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

? Has frequent communication with, and direct supervision by, Engineering Manager for instruction and guidance.

? Work is reviewed for accuracy and overall quality.

? Work with and support other EarthScope Consortium staff while working on projects.

? Foster a professional culture through the use of strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications.

? Communicate clearly and effectively with other team members to ensure tasks are completed on time and with best practices.

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

? Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree or equivalent professional experience in engineering, geosciences, or related field at time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability for the position:

? Ability to gain and retain knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures for geophysical sensors, such as high precision GNSS instruments, Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS), small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (sUAS), borehole strainmeters, or related instruments, used within designated project areas.

? Proficiency in the operation of hand and power tools (i.e., cordless drill, chop saw, grinder, etc.).

? Ability to take initiative to learn assigned technical/engineering skills within established training time frames to ensure the needs of the project, science community, sponsors and co-workers are met.

? Ability to work under direct supervision both independently and in a team environment to accomplish project goals.

? Ability to assess one\'s interactions and actions to determine responsibility of activities and incidents and ensure personal accountability for the successful completion of projects.

? Ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

? Ability to apply logic and reasoning to identify problems and participate in decision making, including:

o Assisting with project assessment, planning, and coordination with members of designated project teams.

o Assisting with inspecting and testing the quality and performance of geophysical equipment and systems.

o Determining appropriate tools and equipment needed to complete assigned projects.

o Assisting with geophysical sensor and system repairs using the appropriate tools.

o Assisting with performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

? Ability to understand routine problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions.

? Ability to organize and prioritize work schedules for self.

? Ability to compute, analyze, and interpret data.

? Ability to make decisions which have limited impact on the job function.

? Ability to engage in safety training under challenging field conditions.

Other Requirements:

? Requires periodic safety training, including wilderness, avalanche, helicopter, first-aid, etc.

? A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license is required.

? Must be able to comply with the EarthScope Consortium\xe2\x80\x99s Motor Vehicle Policy.

? Frequent travel (up to 50% of a calendar year) by conventional means including aircraft, motor vehicle,boat, etc.

? A valid passport is required for polar and international projects.

? Must be able to meet the Physical Qualification Determination for Arctic and Antarctic deployments (PESJ-POL_2000.09a) for polar assignment.
