KIPP New Jersey is part of the nationally recognized \xe2\x80\x9cKnowledge Is Power Program\xe2\x80\x9d network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students for success in college and in life. In 2002, KIPP New Jersey first opened its doors in Newark\'s South Ward as a single class of 80 fifth graders and has since grown to educate over 7,738 students in grades K-12 across 15 schools in Newark and Camden. More than 90% of KIPP New Jersey students currently qualify for free or reduced meals.

The Deputy Head of Schools (DHOS) works with a specific Head of Schools (HOS) to help provide real-time training and coaching to the KIPP New Jersey School Leaders and their shared leadership teams.

This position furthers the mission of KIPP New Jersey because it helps the schools and HOS to develop their shared leadership teams to allow for effective overall school management and leadership. As a result, the schools also will have robust leadership succession plans. Lastly, this position allows for quality leadership options when there is a need for a sudden, unexpected leadership transition in one of our schools.

Provide educational leadership & curriculum support

  • Supervise the development of leadership and management skills of the schools\' shared leadership teams and support them in the development of their faculty
  • Work with the School Leaders to develop and implement long range plans for curriculum, instructional evaluation, and school improvement
  • Support the school team to build a strong, cohesive team culture that models KIPP New Jersey beliefs and values
  • Institute strong accountability systems and opportunities for the schools to reach high achievement results
  • Model highly effective teaching focused on the achievement of strong objectives and the integration of KIPP New Jersey\'s shared beliefs, values, and operating norms in each respective school
  • Support the HOS by staying well-informed of current curricular and educational thoughts, trends, and practices, as well as, proposed legislation impacting the schools
  • Support the HOS to ensure that the School Leaders have a clear succession plan and provides the shared leaders with opportunities to learn and grow as leaders
  • Support the HOS in managing annual and long-term school planning
Support the hiring of outstanding faculty
  • Support the Head of Schools in hiring and managing School Leaders who embody the mission, beliefs, and values of KIPP New Jersey
  • Plan and implement professional development for the School Leaders
  • Coach and develop school leaders in conjunction with the HOS
  • Support the HOS in supervising School Leaders in the hiring and management of school faculty
  • Assist School Leaders in the creation and implementation of effective professional development opportunities for their school faculty
  • Ensure that the school leaders are following best hiring practices.
  • Support the HOS in developing a systematic performance evaluation of School Leaders
  • Implement practices to appropriately recognize and reward excellence and effectively address poor performance
  • Ensure that school leaders receive additional support in critical areas
  • Support the HOS in overseeing faculty relations across the schools, ensuring cohesion and collaboration, and with elementary, middle, and high school faculty
Actively participate in the leadership of KIPP New Jersey
  • Attend and participate in meetings related to KIPP New Jersey and the schools
  • Inform and advise KIPP New Jersey leadership about the programs, practices, and challenges of the schools
  • Ensure that the schools are aligned with, and integrated into, all aspects of KIPP New Jersey
  • Ensure school leaders are aware of policy updates at both the regional and state level.
Perform general tasks that support the school community
  • Ensure School Leaders have clearly articulated plans for daily operations and implementation of student services, including support services, discipline and management, and crisis intervention
  • Serve as the liaison between the schools and external stakeholders, donors, and third party constituents
Assist the HOS and School Leaders with Budget Management
  • Support the HOS by working with School Leaders to create and implement a comprehensive and fiscally sustainable annual operating budget
  • Support the Head of Schools in supervising the School Leaders to ensure adherence to the Board-approved final budget as well as an ongoing commitment to the KIPP New Jersey culture of thrift
Qualifications

Education and Knowledge:
  • Proven success as a School Leader/principal
  • Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited institution with a focus in Business or Education preferred
  • Proven success in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Master\'s Degree preferred
Skills:
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy required
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Excellent leadership and management skills required; the ability to motivate, educate, coach, and inspire both internal and external audiences
  • Ability to plan, make decisions, and execute based on unforeseen, future circumstances
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to work
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; Ability to function as both a catalyst and a coach, guiding people at all levels of the organization by utilizing a facilitative approach that results in advancing the learning and development of others
  • Ability to clearly articulate and sell a vision, outline and detail a project plan, and follow up the articulations and outlines with thorough execution
  • Public speaking
  • Proven writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills
  • Strong typing skills are required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency using computers, printers, copy machines, and fax machines
