Job Description







The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world\'s busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department\'s main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is seeking a Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. The Deputy Commissioner of Public Information is chiefly responsible for the strategic management of the agency\xe2\x80\x99s overarching public information strategy, dissemination of critical information during emergency situations and showcasing the FDNY\xe2\x80\x99s mission and core values.

Responsibilities of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information will include:

  • Oversee the Department\xe2\x80\x99s internal and external public information efforts.
  • Develop messages to the public before, during and after emergencies.
  • Oversee all staff members of the Press and Communications Office.
  • Coordinate message development with public information officers from local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations, private-sector partners, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Provide media outlets and professionals with agency objectives as it relates to mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to ensure factual and accurate information is issued to the public.
  • Support the executive staff\xe2\x80\x99s communications efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with media and external stakeholders to facilitate coverage of agency projects and initiatives.
  • Oversee and manage Department ceremonies and events.
