Job Summary

The Culture Instructor will learn, and then instruct youth in all current Kenaitze Cultural Programs, including Native Youth Olympics, Traditional Dena\'ina dance, music, art, and Huch\'ulyeshi Outdoor Way of Living. Culture Instructors will facilitate some courses through distance delivery blended learning with the support of content-area experts, as well as deliver in-person culture courses based on their own cultural areas of expertise. Culture Instructors will engage in learning the Dena\'ina language and will receive training to teach Dena\'ina language. Culture Instructors will provide drug, alcohol and suicide prevention and intervention services to youth based on the Tribe\'s values, tradition and culture through after school programs and summer camps. The Culture Instructor will be responsible for providing cultural support to Yaghanen staff working on projects and activities.

Essential Functions

  • Provide supervision and direct instruction for youth participating in the Tribe\'s youth culture and language programs, including summer camps, Native Youth Olympics, Jabila\'ina Dance Group, and Del Dumi Drum Group, and tutoring
  • Develop and implement cultural education courses and presentations in a public setting
  • Works as a team member with Yaghanen staff as well as other Departments of the Tribe as directed to insure cultural programming is appropriately reflected in all tribal programs
  • Assist Yaghanen K-12 team in researching, programs and concepts for Yaghanen programs, assesses program needs and performance
  • Instruct and manage youth during Yaghanen summer and winter programs. Responsible for proactive family communication and record management for Yaghanen
  • Transport youth and items (including lifting & driving) for Yaghanen programs
  • Model appropriate behavior for youth
  • Work as a team member with Yaghanen staff to ensure safety for all field programs

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with youth
  • A deep understanding of and appreciation for the Kenaitze Dena\'ina culture, history and traditions
  • Experience in public speaking preferred
License/Certification
  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver\'s license and must remain insurable under the Tribe\'s policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire
Preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
  • 25 years of age preferred
