Job Summary: Responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating the preparation of estimates for large and complex projects and services related to industrial and commercial construction projects. Responsible for directing overall estimating activities, across the organization. Works with corporate estimating team and divisional estimators to maintain and improve high-quality and efficient operations. Evaluates and recommends process improvements with appropriate studies and cost analyses. Maintains a continuous review of schedules, methods, standards, or other operational factors and makes recommendations for changes to improve quality and on-time completion of estimates, while reducing costs. Exercises high-level discretionary judgment on a regular basis; exercises high-level autonomy in performing assigned responsibilities. Develops, produces, and maintains production units according to industry standards as directed. This role is expected to spend 50% in Medford, OR office and 50% at the FDT home office in Central Point, OR. Relocation assistance offered for the Medford, OR office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist VP of Estimating with large project bids and proposals as requested.
  • Assist, facilitate, and delegate in preparing technical proposals, submittal packages and other bidding documents.
  • Validate that estimators prepare quantity take-offs and unit pricing using established company production rates.
  • Analyze and evaluate project plans, specifications, scope, difficulty, and any other requirements necessary to help VP of Estimating, Division Managers, Branch Managers, and Estimators make the appropriate decisions to either bid the project or not.
  • Secure annual vendor pricing and select vendors and subcontractors by their cost-effectiveness for each project, maintain FDT database.
  • Maintain list of prequalified subcontractors.
  • Maintain communication with estimators and work to improve on any observed inaccuracies or omissions in plans and specifications, estimate files, data storage and any process that is not followed.
  • Review and analyze all quotes to assure they meet the standards and specifications for the project, make sure estimators obtain multiple quotes for products.
  • Use the Request for Information (RFI) process when information is lacking, document appropriately.
  • Facilitate and support bid reviews all projects over $1M review threshold, participate in and provide support, expertise, and guidance on bid reviews.
  • Communicate with general contractors, owners, vendors, and subcontractors and trades as requested.
  • Coordinate with vendors to completely cover the scope in the most cost-effective way.
  • Coordinate responses to vendor or subcontractor questions; resolve issues immediately and completely.
  • Bid support in all aspects, know all estimating programs on what they do and how they function to resolve or support on as needed basis.
  • Prepare and assist with process and procedures writeup, create training materials for estimators and provide in person training to new estimators and existing estimators on new processes.
  • Be available on bid days to assist in the collection and review of incoming quotes.
  • Attend project job walks as assigned.
  • Prepare conceptual estimates and/or budgets.
  • Planswift programming and maintenance to help estimators use their takeoff time efficiently.
  • Ensures that company estimating policies and standard operating procedures are followed and applied consistently across the organization.
  • Recommend or provide solutions to estimating processes and operations. Evaluate and propose new processes. Participate in the evaluation and recommendation of improvements proposed by divisional personnel.
  • Acts as a liaison between corporate and division leaders and estimators on issues and technical questions.
  • Conducts regular training and coaching of estimating personnel to develop the right capabilities to ensure operational efficiency and maintain competitiveness.
  • Maintain proficiency in project principles, policies, and procedures and apply them during the course of work.
  • Maintain and update master templates, databases, and product updates.
  • Maintain weekly audits of G Drive and E Drive folder structures in the job file, all correspondence records and notes for the project being bid are logged and saved properly.
  • Participate in and/or lead weekly planning meetings with estimating staff.
  • Assist PMs with kickoff and buyouts on projects.
  • Assist Project Managers with purchasing and change order estimates as requested.
  • Work with Project Managers to finalize job close outs to capture production rates for future estimates. Enforce historical data entry.
  • Provide guidance and oversee marketing and business development structures including project profiles, statement of qualifications and opportunity management reporting.

Key Requirements, Education, and Experience:
  • Formal experience in estimating construction projects or experience in the planning or managing of engineering design or construction, or experience in overseeing large engineering projects.
  • Professional education and/or experience in the construction and/or relevant industries.
  • Thorough understanding of estimating and/or construction management.
  • Significant level of overall experience in the design/construction field, specifically industrial and commercial construction.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent math and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft operating systems and all Microsoft products with an ability to accurately learn new software quickly.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction and estimating.
  • Degree or certification in a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of Vista / Viewpoint
  • Valid Driver\'s license, insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to travel on as needed basis and short notice.
