The mission of
Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. Our officers are commissioned special police, vested through the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Job Overview

The Communications Specialist, a member of Georgetown University Police Department\xe2\x80\x99s 24/7 public safety answering point (PSAP), performs a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, security, and law enforcement operations in accordance with existing university, state and federal guidelines.

Working independently with general supervision, as well as with patrol officers, security officers, and student guards, they work shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays in a fast paced, time critical, stressful and demanding environment in duties that require good communications, resource management, and multitasking skills for responding to citizens\xe2\x80\x99 needs and the dispatching of police officers in calls for service.

Reporting to the Police Communications Supervisor, the Communications Specialist has duties that include but are not limited to answering emergency telephone lines, dispatching police officers, monitoring the university fire alarm system, monitoring the university closed-circuit television (CCTV) security system, and providing information and customer service to the university community via both telephone and a walk-up window.

The Communications Specialist answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service, dispatches these calls, initiates EMS responses, monitors alarm systems, and works the customer service desk, staff the Georgetown University Police Communications Center. They answer calls from the public regarding all types of emergencies, ranging from crimes being committed to various kinds of university community needs

They work alone or in partnership with another Communications Officer or Specialist with little supervision. When dealing with callers, the Communications Specialist remains calm and collected while displaying good communications skills \xe2\x80\x93 and prioritizes calls, depending on the level of emergency.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED/equivalency - preference for some college coursework
  • At least 3 years of general work experience [note: an equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the education and experience requirements]
  • APCO certified for CPR, NCIC, APCO, and Public Safety Telecommunicator
  • FEMA-certified for Incident Command
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must qualify for a Security Officer License in the District of Columbia
  • No felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct
  • Must not currently be wanted for any crime
  • Must not have been found guilty by reason of mental illness for any crime
  • Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the U.S. for the past 10 consecutive years
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation
  • Must become certified and maintain a NCIC/WALES certification
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and remain calm while performing complex operations under stress
  • Ability to assist in tasks that include but are not limited to training new communications center staff
  • Ability to perform miscellaneous clerical tasks such as updating and maintaining department records
  • Ability to maintain required APCO certifications and current knowledge of police and communications methods and practices
  • Ability to represent the Police Department by participating in various committees
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to assist the public in a professional manner
  • Have the ability to multitask and prioritize in a very busy police communications center
  • Ability to communicate effectively via telephone and radio
  • Ability to handle stress under emergency situations
  • Ability to type at least 35 words per minute
  • Experience operating computers using MS Windows


Preferred qualifications
  • College degree
  • National Crime Information Center/Washington Area Law Enforcement System (NCIC/WALES) Operator requirements as set out by the FBI Criminal Justice Information System
  • 1 to 3 years of dispatcher-related/communications center experience
