I. POSITION TITLE : Bilingual Advocacy and Engagement Coordinator Salary $50,000-$55,000 Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate\'s relevant experience, and internal equity.
II. GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The focus of this position is on accelerating our consumer engagement work, providing formalized support to mentors around public benefit challenges and ensuring that efforts are inclusive. The position is responsible for engaging current and former program participants in advocacy efforts including but not limited to the Voices Advocacy Council (an advocacy group of current and former EMPath participants), the Story Sharers Network, budget and legislative activities, voting and other events and activities to support and advance advocacy work and assist participants in developing their advocacy skills. The position is also responsible for supporting mentors across all departments in navigating various public benefit program challenges that participants experience, tracking information and utilizing this information to support EMPath\xe2\x80\x99s Center for Learning and Practice in providing related training. The position will also partner with our communications team to share information via the all-staff newsletter, website, social media and in other communications. The person in this role will also take the lead on providing advocacy trainings to participants and staff across the organization.

IV. ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE JOB:
Participant engagement (50%)
  • Builds and supports advocacy participation of current and past EMPath participants in our consumer group (Voices Advocacy Council - VAC), events, meetings, and trainings. This includes planning and facilitating the VAC meetings in English and Spanish, regular recruitment of new members and retention of current members, supporting and building relationships with members, providing training and information sessions at program sites and carrying out other engagement activities
  • Runs voter engagement drives at program sites and helps educate participants and staff on voting which could include creation of materials and presentations
  • Supports efforts to solicit formal and informal feedback from participants to create and inform advocacy agenda
  • Supports the Story Sharers Network by helping to engage participants who speak Spanish in sharing their stories
  • Translates materials and interprets at meetings and events as needed
  • Delivers other presentations and trainings as needed
Mentor support (30%)
  • Supports mentors by serving as a primary resource for all issues relative to public benefits programs (cash assistance, SNAP, rental assistance, childcare vouchers, etc.). This includes intensified outreach and awareness building, tracking and follow-up with mentors, creating materials and resources for staff to help navigate challenges
  • Works with other departments to integrate advocacy work throughout the organization and learn from colleagues about the needs and experiences of participants including soliciting feedback through small group meetings and one on one meetings; carries out internal advocacy presentations and trainings
  • Partners with the Center for Learning and Practice Department to coordinate external trainings and opportunities for learning; develops content for mentor newsletter and website in conjunction with our communications team
Lobbying (10%)
  • Supports EMPath\xe2\x80\x99s budget and legislative efforts; helps plan and organize for lobby days and advocacy events including engaging participants and staff
  • Represents EMPath at meetings and events as needed
Administrative (10%)
  • Assists with updating Apricot, EMPath\xe2\x80\x99s database
  • Performs other administrative tasks as needed
  • Works closely with departmental interns and volunteers
V. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Spanish fluency required; native speaker preferred
  • Extensive experience facilitating groups, delivering presentations and trainings, and developing materials, particularly for families who are low-income and/or experiencing homelessness
  • Excellent communicator with demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, resolve conflicts and solve problems with minimal supervision
  • Ability to build relationships and use influence to guide others
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail, accountability, planning and execution
  • Ability to collaborate cross-departmentally with credibility
  • Adequate experience with computer systems, Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint) online databases, social media and basic web communications; knowledge of Zoom and other online platforms
  • A flexible self-starter with a great deal of initiative; comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of the Massachusetts\xe2\x80\x99 state budget process, state level advocacy (Massachusetts) and/or federal level advocacy preferred
VI. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience and/or demonstrated strong capabilities in community engagement/organizing, advocacy, government, legal aid, and/or lived experience
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills required
  • Experience with or background in basic benefit programs preferred
  • Experience with federal and/or state level (Massachusetts) advocacy preferred
VII. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. This position requires one day a week in the office at our downtown location but will require 2-3 days in the office starting in July. This position requires travel to program sites throughout Boston.
