The Office of University Counsel at Temple University seeks an experienced attorney to handle a wide array of matters, including but not limited to (1) employment claims, (2) labor issues and proceedings, (3) litigation/litigation management, and (4) related business and policy matters attendant to university operations. Consideration will be given to legal experience in higher education or with higher education and/or academic medical center clients.

Although the principal expertise necessary for the position is labor and employment, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to utilize and/or develop skills relating to a variety of areas, with the goal of developing a well-rounded practice in higher education.

The Office of University Counsel provides legal counsel to the university, including all of its schools, departments and units, as well as its academic medical center, on a diverse range of issues, including government contracts and grants, research, intellectual property, technology transfer, litigation, employment, tax and non-profit law, higher education law, privacy, safety and environmental law, compliance, fundraising, investments, facilities, construction, real estate, international programs and relationships, and general business transactions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

JD from accredited US law school, with high academic achievement, and five (5) or more years\xe2\x80\x99 practice experience in handling a variety of employment and labor matters, preferably with experience representing a higher education institution. Admission to at least one state bar, with ability to become licensed in Pennsylvania within one (1) year of notification of employment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Recent professional writing sample is required.

  • Provide timely and cogent legal advice on employment, labor and related matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • * Recent professional writing sample will be required.
  • Ability to address a wide array of clients needs responsively and respectfully while exercising the highest level of judgement.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting research of state and federal legislation, administrative and court decisions, investigating legal issues and making recommendations.
  • Ability to facilitate education and training sessions regarding legal issues affecting the University and University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous disparate matters and clients in a timely manner through the application of diplomacy, interpersonal skills and observation/knowledge of behavior and human nature.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
